Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Quality health care in an asset to any community, but during tough economic times, access to affordable health care becomes vital. Now, more than ever, people depend on Planned Parenthood to stay healthy. Women who find themselves unexpectedly unemployed or without health insurance shouldn't go without an annual exam, cancer screenings or birth control. Our promise is that safety net resources like Planned Parenthood will be here to help patients plan their families and stay healthy.

In 2009-2010, a record of over 60,000 women, men and teens received birth control, annual exams, cancer prevention screenings, STD testing and treatment, and high-quality health care at PPCW. We completed the biggest capital campaign in PPCW's history, and moved into the new, state-of-the-art Regional Service Center-- one of the largest, most functional and one of the only LEED certified Planned Parenthood headquarters in the country. This new service center enabled PPCW to increase its clinical services to the community by 10% in 2009-2010.

This increase in organizational capacity could not have come at a better time, as PPCW is facing increased need for services. In 2008, 1 out of 4 patients received a discount of 20-100% on services, due to financial need and lack of insurance. Due to the recession and loss of employer-based health insurance, this number has increased to 1 in 3 patients needing additional help.

The Education Department piloted programs to reach at-risk youth; and was part of the Northwest Coalition for Adolescent Health (NWCAH) that in September of 2010 was awarded $20 million by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Adolescent Health to replicate the Teen Outreach Program (TOP), a proven, evidence-based youth development program aimed at reducing teen pregnancy. The program will focus on areas throughout the Northwest where teen birth and pregnancy rates are high and health disparities exist. Through this new program and partnership, Planned Parenthood will reach more than 2,000 youth over five years.

Once again, PPCW’s health centers treated a record number of patients during the last year. More than 60,000 women, men and teens visited one of PPCW’s health centers for affordable contraception, cervical cancer prevention services, testing and treatment of STDs, pregnancy testing and options counseling, and much more.

Our newest health center in McMinnville, OR has now been open for over a year. The number of patients served at this new health center continues to grow as we strengthen relationships within the community and introduce neighbors to this new resource.

In Washington, we’ve begun serving a new group of patients as the new Title X provider in Clark County. Our two health centers in Vancouver continue to see more patients.

With a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, our revolutionary Online Health Center may soon expand and provide health care to those outside of our traditional service area. The first phase of this grant is currently funding research into potential expansion possibilities, with hopes that the implementation of the growth plans we identify will be funded by a second grant from the Foundation.

After five years of dreaming, planning, and building, Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette's Elizabeth Flanagan Regional Service Center in North Portland was completed in January 2010-- on time and under budget. This state-of-the-art facility allowed us to increase the number of services provided to the community by 10%.

Program Description:

Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette continues to be a powerful advocate for women’s health in Oregon. Planned Parenthood activists and grassroots leaders have been working tirelessly to keep Oregon one of only six states in our nation with no laws restricting a woman’s access to reproductive health care.

This year, Planned Parenthood student activists in Oregon responded to a federal regulation that sent the cost of birth control skyrocketing for college students. Local Vox groups (Vox: Student Voices for Planned Parenthood) organized a successful press conference to bring media and community attention to the dangerous effects of the 2005 Deficit Reduction Act. Additionally, student activists collected 1,500 letters, generated hundreds of phone calls to elected officials, and visited the offices of our Senators to demand that the provision allowing college health centers to purchase birth control at discounted rates be restored.

Our base of grassroots leaders and activists has grown substantially in the past year. An additional 100,000 Planned Parenthood supporters were identified, and our Planned Parenthood Action Network email list expanded to 60,000 members. Legislative Action Teams in Portland, Salem, Clackamas County, Bend, Southwest Washington, and Washington County continue to lead the grassroots effort and engage community members in choice activism.

Planned Parenthood has laid the groundwork for a successful and exciting state legislative session in 2009. We will address the need for medically accurate and comprehensive sex education in our schools, seek dedicated funding for testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, fight for paid family leave legislation to empower working women and their families, and we will work in coalition to establish laws regulating toxins that are known to be particularly harmful on reproductive health.

This summer, PPCW welcomed Public Affairs staff from affiliates across our region to host an intensive Live Action Camp training. Organizers from Alaska, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Idaho learned best practices for successful grassroots activism from our nationally renowned Public Affairs program.
