Mission Statement

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers compassion in action. We focus on people, working one-on-one with those in need. We offer an open door, free of judgment. We share time with individuals to discover their needs and help them stand strong. We offer a range of services to help people start to move forward, to build a better life.

Our Mission

In the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a spiritually based lay organization, which leads women and men to join together by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering

The essential elements of the Society are Spirituality, Friendship and Service.

Vincentians are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group, and economic level and are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of sharing.

Organized locally, Vincentians embrace all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served.

Impact Statement

St. Vincent de Paul of Sonoma County served over 89,000 meals in our free Dining Room while more than 64,000 purchases were made in our Thrift Store in 2010.

We made a difference for over 145,000 needy residents in Sonoma County who utilized our services, and countless others who received comfort and support through a person to person visit from our volunteers.

Since it opened, the profits from our Thrift Store have supported our Dining Room, food pantries and other programs to help the poor and needy. Sadly, the number of unemployed, homeless, and hungry has increased and each year the number of men, women and particularly children who require assistance in Sonoma County has grown.

Every two years the County of Sonoma is required to conduct a Homeless Census and Survey in order to receive funding from the Federal government. While statistics are often boring and hollow, these provide some insight into the challenges faced by our community.

  • Annual estimate for the number of homeless people in Sonoma County increased by 59% in 2011.
  •  39.8% increase in point in time homelessness from 2009 to 2011, with Cloverdale (112%), Petaluma (11.2%), Rohnert Park (359.8%), Santa Rosa (64.4%), Sebastopol (219%) and Sonoma (516.7%) all experiencing an increase.
  • 51.5% increase in unsheltered homeless from 2009 to 2011, with a startling 216% increase in children under 18 years old.
  • 68.2% of individuals who were homeless in 2011 were homeless for the first time
  • 48% were receiving no government benefits while 28% received less than $500.
  • Fully 73.9% depended on free meals (like those offered by SVdP’s free Dining Room), and 39.3% on Food Pantries (like those run by the SVdP Conferences) to eat.

Program: Individual Assistance

Budget:
--
Category:
Human Services
Population Served:
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Disabled, General or Disability Unspecified
Aging/Elderly/Senior Citizens

Program Description:

In addition to operating our Retail Thrift Store in Rohnert Park and our free Dining Room in Santa Rosa, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Sonoma also provides community based individual assistance. Call 707.584.1579 for a referral to individual assistance or stop by the Dining Room.

Neighborhood volunteers (called Vincentians), are organized around SVdP Conferences that are located in neighborhoods within the County.

Vincentians provide person to person assistance by visiting the needy in their homes, learning about their specific situation and offering personalized help. Many Conferences operate a pantry or other food program, provide vouchers for clothing and / or furniture and offer compassionate care.

This is one of the distinguishing characteristics between the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and other organizations who aid the less-fortunate.  Our volunteers strive to help get people on the road to independence and self reliance by understanding their individual situation.

While we are delighted to assist those who seek us out through our Dining Room or Thrift Store, our volunteers try to identify people who might benefit from our services, often going into people's homes to learn the extent of the needs.

Vincentians making the home visit may offer assistance by linking them to our Free Dining Room or Retail Thrift Store; introducing them to our partner agencies for individual case management, job training or government assistance; or offering housing referrals or spiritual guidance.

It is our goal to provide not only immediate help, but also help to build bridges to long term solutions. We help individuals to resolve the issues that put them in a position of need in the first place.

Program Description:

Opened in 1984, the Free Dining Room is one of the oldest and largest facilities in Santa Rosa to serve hot meals to the hungry, seven days per week, 365 days per year. Each year, volunteers serve more than 90,000 nourishing meals to the homeless and low-income people of Sonoma County.

The Free Dining Room relies on the support of many people from varied backgrounds who volunteer in excess of 10,000 hours of time each year. Also many grocery/specialty stores, restaurants, the Redwood Empire Food Bank, and other suppliers generously donate over $700,000 of food per year, helping to keep our program cost-effective.

Location & Hours

Caring volunteers in our free Dining Room prepare and serve a hot, nutritious lunch from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm every day, 365 days a year.

The Dining Room is located in the Railroad Square area of Santa Rosa, at 610 Wilson Street. Entrance is through the back of the building off 7th St.

Program Description:

In addition to offering exceptional bargains and affordable shopping options on gently used clothing, furniture and household goods, we work with local agencies to accommodate particularly needy clients with home furnishings or clothing.  In order to receive emergency clothing or furniture, a referral from a local social service agency or SVdP Conference is required.

Best of all, unlike many other thrift-store chains, the merchandise you donate to or purchase at our Thrift Store has a direct benefit to your neighbors in need. One-hundred percent of our store profits are fed back into our programs, providing much-needed support to families and individuals who are suffering in Sonoma County.

Much to the delight of our more fortunate customers, we also serve as a secret source of one of a kind collectibles, unique furniture and vintage clothing.

Funding Needs

Since it opened, the profits from our Thrift Store have supported our Dining Room, food pantries and other programs to help the poor and needy. Sadly, the number of unemployed, homeless, and hungry has increased and each year the number of men, women and particularly children who require assistance in Sonoma County has grown.

If you would like to help provide hope and positive change to Sonoma's poor children and families, we gratefully accept financial contributions, clothing and furniture donations and used auto donations. Find out more about making a gift by visiting our website at http://www.svdp-sonoma.org by calling 707-584-1579, x205.

With your generous support, we will continue to ease the burden of families living in poverty in Sonoma County today and for years to come. Your donation, large or small, can make a big difference in a needy neighbor's life.

  • $25 pays for 10 meals in our Santa Rosa Dining Room!
  • $50 pays for 20 meals for your neighbors who lost their job!
  • $100 pays for 40 meals for people who might otherwise go hungry!
