Program Description:
Meals On Wheels of San Francisco’s state-of-the-art kitchen gives us the flexibility to produce a cost-effective, three-tiered food plan of hot, chilled and frozen meals. Diabetic, low-sodium, and mechanically softened meal plans are available for seniors with special nutritional needs, and each of our meals meets one-third of the recommended daily allowance of nutrients for this age group. The unique services we offer make us the only viable option for many of our clients.
Program Long-Term Success:
We will ensure that no senior shall wait more than 30 days average for services.
Seniors with an emergency need will receive our services within 3 to 5 days.
We will continuously monitor the quality of nutrition and seek to provide the highest
quality balanced diet possible. Through this, we hope to improve the health of clients
with chronic conditions that can be remedied through proper nutrition.
We will reduce isolation for our clients by maintaining stable, high-quality
driver and social-work teams, and by increasing the number of volunteers to
serve as friendly visitors.
Through referrals to outside services as well as through our own programs, we will work
to meet our clients’ needs beyond nutrition—most importantly, safety in the home.
Program Short-Term Success:
We provide two meals per day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to homebound seniors. We offer low sodium, diabetic and mechanically softened meals for clients with special dietary needs.
Program Success Monitored by:
Board of Directors
Program Success Examples:
920,000 meals delivered
2,400+ unduplicated seniors served
918 seniors removed from the waiting list and placed on our program
2,251 social work home visits
1,801 hours of nutrition counseling provided by registered dietitians
Reduced the wait time for service from an average of 94 days to less than 22 days
Volunteer Needs
- Friendly Visitor/ Grocery Shopper
Homebound seniors are matched with a volunteer to lessen senior isolation. Volunteers commit 10 hours a month to spend with their senior.
- Client Needs Volunteers
Our clients need small repairs and installation in their homes. Handy volunteers install microwaves, replace light bulbs, help with computers, and much more.
- Holiday Programs
Each year, we mobilize community volunteers to deliver a turkey dinner to over 1,000 San Francisco seniors. During the winter holidays, volunteers at local corporations and businesses lead gift drives and donate personal care items for holiday gift bags. Volunteers assemble and organize the gift bags for delivery. - Special Events
Volunteers help at fundraising events to raise support and awareness for San Francisco’s seniors. Our major event is our Chefs & Vintners Gala in May. We have many others throughout the year, as well.
