Impact Statement

Every weekday, our Meals on Wheels programs deliver over 2,200 meals to homebound seniors, approximately 600,000 meals a year. The elders we serve are unable to buy food or prepare meals for themselves. Two thirds of them are 75 years of age or older and one third are over 85. About half live at poverty level and over half live alone. Many are recuperating from illness, injury or surgery and are considered to be at high nutritional risk. All are eager for good food and companionship.

CEO/Executive Director Statement:

The upcoming boom in the senior population is as well documented as the ongoing cuts in federal and state funding. Hospitals are discharging patients earlier in an effort to combat rising costs. The cost of one year’s supply of home-delivered meals is about the same as the cost of one day in the hospital. Proper nutrition like that provided by Meals on Wheels plays an increasingly vital role in healing and full recovery. In many cases our meal delivery service means the difference between living at home and placement in an institutional care facility. Meals on Wheels drivers provide more than just the nutritional content in the food; for some seniors the delivery driver is the only human contact they receive in a whole day. The visits not only support the seniors nutritionally and emotionally, but by performing daily check-ins the drivers are able to assess if the home environment is safe and if the senior is in need of medical assistance. Many times drivers have been a lifeline for these seniors, making the call to the ambulance when a senior has had a fall, a stroke, or other incapacitating event. Meals on Wheels is there to support them when they return home from the hospital.

New Board President for Alameda County Meals on Wheels
June 21, 2010
Oakland, CA – The board of Alameda County Meals on Wheels has elected Art Hoffman as its new President. Art is currently Chief Executive Officer of Vital Link Emergency Response Systems, a Berkeley-based company providing emergency medical alert systems. He also works with the Senior Injury Prevention Program and other senior advocacy groups throughout the Bay Area. Art succeeds Mike Skubic of Community Bank of the Bay who has served in the position for five years.

“We’ve got a big job to do, and I’m pleased to play an important role in feeding seniors everyday across the county,” said Hoffman. “I love the independence we are able to provide to local older adults. Allowing them to stay in their home and have a friendly visitor every day has a major impact on their lives.”

Alameda County Meals on Wheels, a collaboration of 6 Meals on Wheels programs in the county, delivers warm meals to over 2,200 seniors every day.

Cindy Houts, Executive Director of ACMOW said of Art Hoffman, “He is a tireless worker on behalf of frail and homebound seniors across our community. We are lucky to have him on our team.”
