Program:
Community-Based Mentoring
- Budget:
-
$180,000
- Category:
-
Youth Development
- Population Served:
-
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Program Description:
<p>This program matches qualified adult mentors with children ages 6-18. They meet 3-4 times a month for at least one year and spend time participating in activities out and about in the community that they have a shared interest in.</p>
Program Long-Term Success:
We work collaboratively with other nonprofit agencies, educational agencies, county agencies, businesses, and faith-based organizations to reach the children who need our services and to recruit mentors to meet that need. We also work hard with other child-serving agencies to ensure that we are not duplicating services and that we cross-refer to services that would benefit the child and his or her family. After 30 years of providing mentoring, we have consistently shown a positive impact on the children served year after year. We received the Gold Standard Award from the national agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, in 2009. This award was only given to the 22 agencies out of 400+ agencies in the network that met their standards of quality in terms of the number of children served, quality of the mentoring relationship, and revenue increases.
Program Short-Term Success:
<div>BBBSNC has demonstrated positive impacts on the children served in the community-based program year after year. Specifically the majority of children have demonstrated improvements in self-confidence, performance in school, inter-personal relationships with peers, family and other adults, and in avoiding delinquent behaviors. We have also continuously grown the number of children served over the last three years. 2010 was a record all time high at 249 children served throughout our service area.</div>
Program Success Monitored by:
<div>We evaluated our community-based mentoring program annually with surveys completed by parents, mentors, and mentees. We also evaluate the strength of the mentoring relationship.</div>

Big and Little Pal matches meet for an hour once a week for at least one school year at the Little Pal's school. This program currently takes place in the Nevada City and Grass Valley School Districts.</div>
Program Long-Term Success:
Program Short-Term Success:
<div>BBBSNC has been operating this program for two years. It previously was only in the Nevada City School District and was operated by the District. When funding was cut, we stepped in and operated the program in the Nevada City schools while also expanding the program to Grass Valley School District. We served 65 students during the 2010-2011 school year and the majority of children served improved their self-esteem, academic performance, relationships with peers, family, and other adults, and avoided delinquent behaviors.</div>
Program Success Monitored by:
<div>We evaluate this program annually by surveying the teachers, Big Pals and Little Pals on child outcomes we hope to achieve as well as on the quality of the mentoring relationship.</div>
Program Success Examples:
<div>The outcomes we hope to achieve are improvements in key indicators of child competence, confidence, and caring, as well as matches that have strong relationship quality and stay together for at least 6 months.</div>
