Impact Statement from Nonprofit
We provide shelter and transitional housing to 80 families per year. 85% of our families move to more permanent housing. Last year, 516 individuals benefited from our housing, nutrition, mental health counseling, case management, housing placement, and alumni support services.

Chief Executive Profile:
Cate came to FESCO in January, 2008 from Rubicon Programs in Richmond, CA, where she was Director of Operations. In Cate's own words, "I have been motivated by a passion for moving people out of poverty. I understand how a stable and secure place to live is the essential foundation for a family to be able to obtain employment and education, the paths to financial independence. I believe this passion, combined with my experience in affordable housing and nonprofit management, makes for the right fit as Executive Director of FESCO - The Family Shelter." Cate has also served as the Director of Operations at Jewish Vocational Services and Director of Personnel and Administration at Chinatown Community Development Center. At CCDC, she was extensively involved in staffing and ensuring the safety of the organization's 13 affordable housing developments. Cate has extensive experience developing and overseeing volunteer programs and a solid foundation in fund development. An attorney by training, Cate previously had a tenants' rights law practice, was a Commissioner of the San Francisco Rent Board, and served on the Board of the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco. Her first experience feeding and finding housing for homeless people came during her post-college year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. She is a graduate of Yale Law School and Boston College.
CEO/Executive Director Statement:
On any given night, there are over 700 homeless children in Alameda County. We have the power and the moral responsibility to change that. We can end family homelessness in our community. FESCO helps families make permanent changes that enable them to remain self-sufficient over the long run. We are working to ensure that our children, who are two-thirds of our residents, can realistically aspire to college or training in a highly-skilled trade. With your support, we can ensure that they do not become the parents of another generation of homeless families.

Program Description:
Homeless families of all configurations receive shelter and meals in a homelike setting in this 24-bed shelter. Families participate in case management and have access to mental health counseling. Families stay at the Shelter for about 60 days while the stabilize, get connected to resources, and are referred to transitional, shared, or permanent housing.

Program Description:
At Banyan House, homeless families have their own bedroom and private bath and share dining and living space. The House accommodates eight families for 10-month stays. Parents must be working or going to school or both. Case managers work with families to develop budgets and savings, access affordable housing options, and develop life skills including nutrition, parenting, work readiness, and credit repair. Children's programming support child development and academic success. Both child and adult residents have access to mental health counseling in individual and group sessions.

Third Street Permanent Supportive Housing

Program Description:
Families live independently yet with ready access to services in the Third Street Permanent Supportive Housing. Paying one-third of their income as rent, families can stay indefinitely. The Apartments are located next to the Shelter and Counseling Center, so families have easy access to their case manager and to mental health counseling. At least one member of the family must have a designated disability (mental illness, substance abuse, or HIV).

Program Description:
We provide individual and group therapy to both parents and children. Counseling is available to all residents and alumni. Our Clinical Supervisor is an licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who supervises up to three MFT graduate interns.
