Chief Executive
Mr. Peter Szutu
Term:
Since
Jan
1992
Chief Executive Profile:
Biography of Peter Szutu President And CEO Peter Szutu has thirty years of health and human care experience ranging from a medic in the U.S. Air Force to directing a multi-social service agency; from an independent health services consultant to his current position of President & CEO of the Center for Elders' Independence (CEI). He has extensive experience in providing, planning, advocating and implementing a broad range of community oriented health and human services. He has worked for the City of Berkeley as a health planner and the California State Department of Health Services in the Office of External Affairs. Mr. Szutu was intimately involved in the development of three of the four adult day health care programs in Alameda County. He served as President of the Board of Community Adult Day Health Services (CADHS) and initiated the evolution of CADHS to CEI. He served as interim executive director of CEI from July 1, 1993 to January 1994, becoming the permanent executive director in March 1995. Since joining CEI, Mr. Szutu has nurtured the growth of CEI from 80 participants to nearly 500, from one site to four sites. He has also created a number of collaborative and innovative ways of utilizing the flexibility of the PACE model. These include locating one of the sites in an affordable senior housing facility and working closely with other community health care providers to offer a full continuum of care; from well through frail. Mr. Szutu holds a master's degree in public health administration from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor's degree from the United States International University. Affiliations include Board Member, National PACE Association, NPA Public Policy Committee and Board Vice-chair Over 60/CEI, Inc.
CEO/Executive Director Statement:
"PACE providers are responsible for all care throughout a participant's life. We can only stay in business by concentrating on early intervention to avoid the cost of more expensive care. We are the only health plan that denies people enrollment because they are too healthy and can not dissenroll clients for health reasons. It's a great model of care." -Peter Szutu, CEO
