Mr. Kirk M. Bauer

Profile:

After Kirk Bauer,JD, lost his leg from a grenade explosion in Vietnam in 1969, he experienced the thrill of snow skiing as part of his rehabilitation through Disabled Sports USA, which was just beginning as an organization. Now 44 years later, after 13 years as a volunteer and participant and over 30 years as executive director, Kirk has led the organization to become one of the largest programs in the nation; serving individuals with disabilities, through over 100 community DSUSA chapters in 39 states. As the leader of DSUSA, Kirk is a firm believer in leading by example as the best way to motivate others to participate in sports and recreation. Even at 65, he still regularly participates in “extreme” sports activities on one leg. For example, he won the Boston Marathon in his class at age 52; climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, at 19,000 the tallest mountain in Africa, at age 62; and attempted to climb 20,000’ Mt McKinley in Alaska, at age 64. This year he has successfully completed the Bataan Memorial Death March, a 26 mile hike in the desert in one day; and the The Three Notch Century, a 100 mile, one day cycle over three mountain passes in the White Mountains of Northern New Hampshire. During his service in Vietnam, Sgt. Bauer was twice awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in battle. Sgt. Bauer has been recognized nationally for his work; including a Presidential Appointment by President George W. Bush, to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. President Bush also appointed Bauer to the delegation representing the United States at the 2008 Winter Paralympic Games in Torino Italy and the 2010 Paralympic Games in Beijing. Bauer holds a Doctorate of Law Degree from Boston University School of Law.

Program Description:

Warfighter Sports offers more sports rehabilitation for severely wounded in partnership with its nationwide network of over 100 community-based chapters.  Since 1967, Disabled Sports USA has proudly served wounded warriors, including those injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, through sports rehabilitation programs in military hospitals and communities across the U.S.  The program rebuilds lives through sports by improving self-confidence, promoting independence and uniting families through shared healthy activities.   Contributions cover all expenses for participation, including individualized adaptive instruction, adaptive sports equipment, transportation, lodging and meals for the warrior and a family member.  Since 2003, more than 5,000 of the most severely wounded and their families have been served, including those with amputations, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, visual impairments, and significant nerve and muscle damage.   For more information, visit www.dsusa.org(http://www.dsusa.org) .

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Additional Information
A Charting Impact Report consists of an organization’s responses to the five questions. Helping validate this self-reported data are three reviews. Once an organization has used the online interface to complete its report, its responses will produce a document with a unique URL that will be shared on this website, on your GuideStar profile, on the reports of charities participating in BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations, and – in the future – with other websites and information sources about nonprofits. We encourage organizations to use this URL to share their report on their own website and through their own media channels. Participants will receive guidance about promoting their Charting Impact Report, along with other benefits, once they publish their report.

The work of Disabled Sports USA has been shown to provide a long-lasting, essential difference in the lives of those we serve, as sports rehabilitation has been proven to be very effective at giving people with severe disabilities the physical strength, motivation and confidence to fully join their family, friends and communities in life affirming activities.  In fact in 2009, an independent Harris survey of more than 1,000 people with disabilities found that those that had participated in Disabled Sports USA sports programs had higher levels of health and happiness than those not involved with DSUSA (http://www.dsusa.org/DSUSA-Srv09.pdf). Our expertise in sports programming for people with severe disabilities has led to being selected as a member of the US Olympic Committee, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and a partner with the US Paralympics, who recognized DSUSA with their 2009 Amazing Salute Award. DSUSA is also an active partner with the following national sports organizations: Professional Golfers Association (PGA), Professional Ski Instructors of America – American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA-AASI), US Ski and Snowboard Association, American Canoe Association, USA Cycling, USA Water Ski, Diving Equipment & Manufacturing Association and US Handcycling.
