Program: Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary

Budget:
$400,000
Category:
Animal-Related
Population Served:
Other Named Groups

Program Description:

We own and operate the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary located on 186 acres in southwest Texas. The Sanctuary is home to more than 500 monkeys — vervets, macaques, and baboons — most of whom have been rescued from grim conditions in research laboratories, roadside zoos, and private possession as "pets." We provide them with an enriched environment as close to the wild as possible and with minimal human interference.

Nonhuman primates are intelligent animals with complex behavioral and social needs. Yet almost all rescued primates arrive at our Sanctuary having been deprived of the opportunity to meet these needs. Many have never had contact with other nonhuman primates; never had a proper, nutritious diet; and never had ample space to roam, climb, play, and just be monkeys.

Program Long-Term Success:

Program Short-Term Success:

Managing a large, free-range Sanctuary is not only extremely expensive, it is also a long-term commitment as many of our primates can live up to 30 years. Captial projects that enhance our ability to rescue and rehabilitate primates in need are ongoing.

Program Success Monitored by:

Program Success Examples:

Welcomed more than five new residents who were previously kept as “pets." Rescued two groups of macaques retired from the research industry. None had ever seen/felt grass, sunlight, or an enriched environment.  Completed construction of a new 2.5-acre baboon enclosure complete with shelters and enrichment for our group of baboons.

Funding Needs

Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary — for vital capital improvement projects including an updated water filtration system, construction of 2 one-acre enclosures for new rescues, construction of new shelters and climbing areas.

Elephant Defense Fund — donations to this fund support vital efforts on behalf of elephants in captivity through litigation, legislation, advocacy, and public education.
