How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

IDEA promotes scientific, artistic, and cultural literacy in a number of ways. First, IDEA developed and maintains WebExhibits, an online interactive museum that reaches approximately 8 million annual visitors. The museum’s exhibits include Daylight Saving Time, Calendars through the Ages, Color Vision & Art, Poetry through the Ages, Causes of Color, Bellini’s “Feast of the Gods,” van Gogh’s Letters, and Butter. Each exhibit includes interactive elements, and several include teacher’s guides that help to integrate online learning and classroom learning.

Second, IDEA develops innovative approaches and technologies for education. Recently, the organization released the public beta versions of SpicyNodes, an online radial mapping tool that mimics the way people interact with information offline, and of ColoRotate, an online 3D color selection tool that mimics the way humans perceive color offline. The organization is currently developing new methods of providing online and mobile access to information and expertise.

Third, IDEA engages in education technology research, including researching and publishing the findings of factors that improve online experiences, researching user response to online concept mapping, and writing academic papers about online concept mapping for professional audiences. In addition, IDEA has created new teaching guides for using online concept maps and exhibits.

Fourth, IDEA makes a concerted effort to increase community involvement by offering free and paid memberships, inviting participation in creating concept maps, brainstorming new ideas, providing feedback and prototyping, sharing color palettes, and soliciting financial support. In addition, IDEA provides a number of member services, including the Journal of Interaction Recipes, hosting of SpicyNodes concept maps, hosting of ColoRotate color palettes, and teacher guides.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"IDEA arose out of the belief that, while technology offers extraordinary benefits, it has also had unintended negative consequences. We believe that people’s experience with technology should be personalized, interactive, and intuitive. In addition, our work supports the view that technological approaches should help people exchange meaningful information that leads to a greater understanding of the world in which we live."
