Mission Statement

The Upper Valley Educators Institute (UVEI) was established over 40 years ago and is a national leader in teacher and principal preparation.  Since its inception, UVEI has certified over 800 teachers.  In 2008, the program expanded by establishing a principal certification program, so that the Institute can help meet the need for well-prepared educators, and provide the leadership schools need so that children and teachers succeed. Teacher Internship Program:  UVEI provides a distinctive teacher preparation program for college graduates that is based in classrooms. Since teaching is an art best learned through practice, interns work full-time for an entire academic year in a classroom under the tutelage of mentor teachers, who are chosen from among the best professionals in the region. This practical experience is reinforced by weekly seminars in which interns study topics such as how the brain develops, curriculum design, classroom management, and assessment  Successful completion of the program is based on the demonstration of specific teaching competencies.  The UVEI Teacher Internship program is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET). and by the State of New Hampshire.  Approximately half of UVEI interns also earn certification in Vermont.  Interstate agreements are available from many other states, as well.  Principal Internship Program:  The pedagogy of the principal/school leadership program follows the same premise as the teacher internship model in that principal interns spend the majority of their time in a school under the mentorship of an experienced principal and demonstrate specific school leadership competencies.  The principal program is also approved by ACCET and by the State of New Hampshire and the State of Vermont Boards of Professional Education.   Masters Program:  UVEI also offers two masters degrees:  a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master of Education.

Program 1

The Upper Valley Teacher Institute's teacher preparation program is based in classrooms and designed for adult college graduates who have usually had other careers before deciding to become teachers. The UVTI model differs from university post-graduate programs in education by reversing the percentage of time traditionally allotted to academic theory and classroom practice. Since teaching is an art best learned through practice, intern's work full-time in a classroom under the tutelage of mentor teachers, who are chosen from among the best professionals in the region. In addition, interns are observed and supported by supervisors on the UVTI staff who are highly experienced educators. This practical experience is reinforced by weekly seminars in which interns study the topics normally covered in conventional academic programs. The aim of the interns' mentors and the purpose of the seminars are the same: to help interns develop and prove their competence as classroom teachers. Successful completion of the program is based on the demonstration of specific teaching competencies.
