Mission Statement

BYkids believes that we can understand the world's challenges -- and how to best meet them -- through the personal stories of young people.

BYkids is a global movement that uses storytelling through film to inform, engage and inspire action.

BYkids provides kids around the world with the training and the video cameras to make short documentaries about their lives. Renowned filmmakers mentor these young people in the art of filmmaking.

Through innovative distribution platforms, BYkids films enable fresh, new perspectives to be seen and shared by a global community.

64 million viewers saw the national premiere of FILMS BYKIDS on PBS in early 2016. FILMS BYKIDS, a partnership between THIRTEEN and BYkids to bring the voice of five young filmmakers from different cultures to a wider audience through the power and reach of public media. FILMS BYKIDS pairs master filmmakers, including the late Albert Maysles, Neal Baer and Joyce Chopra among others, with teenagers from around the world to create short personal documentaries that educate Americans as they encourage international understanding and engagement about globally relevant issues. Emmy-nominated actress Ashley Judd serves as series narrator, introducing each 30-minute film in the five-part series that offers a perspective rarely seen in mainstream media.

In addition, millions of students and educators are using our films in classrooms around the world through partnerships including Discovery Education and PenPal Schools.

Our goal is to change the way we see the world, and the way the world sees America. We want young Americans to feel engaged in the world around them in an empathetic way.
