Mission Statement

The Martha's Vineyard Museum is the only comprehensive museum on the island of Martha's Vineyard.  Its collections encompass the rich maritime, agricultural, geologic, Native American, immigration, social and civic history that is representative not only of this island off the coast of Massachusetts, but of all American history.  Founded in 1922 as the Dukes County Historical Society, the organization changed its name in 2006 to the Martha's Vineyard Museum to better reflect the organization's mission.

The Martha's Vineyard Museum inspires all people to discover, explore, and strengthen their connections to this Island and its diverse heritage.

Island History in Island Schools

Knowing Island history gives children a critical sense of local heritage and identity. Currently the MV
Museum provides over 200 classes/year to Island schoolchildren free of charge, both in public
schools and at the museum.
