Mission Statement

Established in 1991, the Northampton Education Foundation (NEF) is a non-profit organization created to fund projects and programs that expand educational opportunities, foster creativity, and enhance academic experiences in Northampton's public schools. The NEF also works to broaden community support for our public schools. We support our mission, in large part, by awarding grants for teacher-initiated projects.

Northampton Environmental Education Program

Small Grants to Teachers: The Northampton Education Foundation awards grants twice a year to encourage the development of creative and innovative teaching and learning initiatives for the Northampton Public Schools consistent with the district's goals. Through the grant program, we support the preparation of new instructional materials, methods, and innovative teaching programs that are introduced into a classroom. We also fund extracurricular initiatives that are intended to enhance student learning. Since the grant program was initiated in 1991, dozens of projects have received funding. These projects have been proposed by teachers and administrators, often in collaboration with parents, community members, and local organizations.
SOS Book Fund: In the spring of 2005, NEF assumed responsibility for the operations formerly run by Support Our Schools (SOS), with the goal of having a single comprehensive organization to support public education in Northampton. Under the merger, NEF has established as 'SOS Book Fund', which runs exactly as it did under SOS. The fund is designated for textbooks, library books, educational materials, and their electronic/technical equivalents. Since the founding of SOS in 1997, the fund has raised and distributed over $150,000 to Northampton Public Schools, and SOS is proud to continue this tradition of community support for our schools.
The Daniel Stephen Goldstein Fund for Arts in Northampton High School: The Foundation is the recipient of an endowment fund established in memory of Daniel Stephen Goldstein, a former student at Northampton High School who had a special love for the arts. Each year, income from this endowment provides for a school-wide premiere arts event at the high school to expose students to the rich world of the arts.
The NEF Endowment Fund: Begun in June 2002, is a permanent, self-sustaining, multi-million dollar fund that will ensure future excellence and innovation in our city schools. The first annual distribution from the Endowment Fund will be in 2007.
