What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Our latest initiative has been partnering with sustainable groups to transform an abandoned urban court into a sustainable greenspace benefitting downtown residents, surrounding neighborhoods, and heritage tourism. Last year's "AHOY!" (art/history/oceans/youth) project--currently being redesigned as an out-of-school time program for '09-- served 17 5th graders from New Bedford's South End public schools. This area is underserved and ethnically diverse. We used the rich maritime culture and customs of the region to amplify self-esteem and self-awareness, to positively frame ethnic contributions, and to increase team building and communication skills. The beneficiaries were the students from at-risk and underserved neighborhoods, as well as the City which can groom them, via our program, as future candidates for maritime research.
