Mission Statement

For more than a decade, NCTAF has been a leading voice on
what matters most for student learning: quality teaching in schools organized
for success. To close the student
achievement gap, we must close the teaching quality gap in high-priority
schools and disciplines. NCTAF engages
policymakers and education leaders in a four-part agenda of analysis, advocacy,
action, and alliances that promotes professional teacher preparation,
professional teaching teams in schools, and professionally rewarding career
paths that recognize teacher contributions to student learning.

Cost of Teacher Turnover Project

NCTAF issued a report on the Cost of Teacher Turnover, based
on a study of the costs of recruiting, hiring, processing, and training
teachers at school and district levels. The findings indicate that the cost of
teacher turnover is substantial in all cases. A Teacher Turnover Cost Calculator may be found at www.nctaf.org(http://www.nctaf.org/) .

Learning Teams Initiative

As part of an ongoing initiative with MetLife Foundation, NCTAF promotes and advocates professional career paths made possible through cross-generational learning teams. NCTAF is currently spotlighting an impending demographic shift that will necessitate a change in the teaching workforce pipeline. In addition to building national awareness around these issues, NCTAF is going deeper in this work with five states.

Teachers Learning in Networked Communities Project (TLINC)

With a planning grant from the AT&T Foundation, pilot funding from Microsoft Partners in Learning, and an implementation grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), NCTAF developed a blended online and face-to-face environment that engages pre-service, novice and veteran teachers in a collaborative learning community. Using an online platform, school leaders are able to provide strong teacher induction and professional development programs while novice teachers can collaborate with experienced veterans in professional learning teams. Initially piloted with three major universities and their district partners, the program recently expanded to three Hispanic-serving institutions and two teaching residency programs. NCTAF recently formed an exclusive partnership with Pearson to provide an online platform designed to support teacher candidates and novice teachers, and to connect colleges of education with their K-12 district partners.

NASA STEM Learning Studios

NCTAF is working with the Goddard Space Flight Center and two Maryland school districts to improve teaching and learning of earth science by engaging NASA Goddard scientists in the design and delivery of compelling project-based modules. On these teams, NASA professionals with deep content knowledge and experience work shoulder-to-shoulder with high school math, science and technology teachers to design learning experiences that engage students in meaningful, extended science inquiry and simultaneously provide teachers with embedded professional development.
