Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Infectious Diseases Fellowship
The Infectious Diseases (ID) Fellowship is a two-year fellowship for promising physicians wishing to specialize in infectious disease. It is comprised of 2-3 years of training in clinical infectious diseases, microbiology, diagnostic molecular biology, epidemiology, pharmacology, clinical study design and methodology and statistics, preparing the fellow for careers in academic infectious diseases as a teacher, investigator and clinical infectious disease specialist. At the end of the training, fellows will have achieved training equivalent to physicians in the US who are board eligible for American Board of Internal Medicine subsection in Infectious Diseases.
Professors in Residence (PiR)
Accordia Global Health Foundation's Professors in Residence program is designed to provide essential counsel and mentoring to current and future infectious disease professionals. The program sends accomplished international physician-scientists to spend 2-4 uninterrupted weeks advising, training, and supervising African scholars and clinicians, adding an essential new component to their development as the next generation of African healthcare professionals.
Integrated Infectious Disease Capacity-Building Evaluation (IDCAP)
In November 2008, Accordia received a three-year, $12.5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to lead the Integrated Infectious Disease Capacity-Building Evaluation (IDCAP).
IDCAP will identify an effective and cost-efficient approach to training mid-level healthcare workers in Africa on infectious disease prevention, care, and treatment. In fall 2009, IDCAP will begin implementing a new infectious disease training package in Uganda and evaluate that package’s impact on clinical skills and patient health. The evaluation could have a major impact on the way doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers are trained.
The training package integrates training for HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases into three classroom courses (one core course and two “booster” courses), and on-site training at 36 health facilities throughout Uganda. The classroom training targets nurses and clinical officers, while the on-site training will build the capacity of multi-disciplinary teams composed of a range of health professionals, such as medical officers and laboratory specialists. The on-site support also includes continuous quality improvement activities.
Accordia leads the IDCAP team in strong partnership with the Ugandan Ministry of Health, the Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University (IDI), University Research Corporation’s Center for Human Services (URC-CHS), and University of Washington’s International Training and Education Center on HIV (I-TECH).
Joint Uganda Malaria Training Program (JUMP)
In 2005, Accordia Global Health Foundation expanded IDI’s training program offerings by launching the Joint Uganda Malaria Training Program (JUMP) in partnership with ExxonMobil’s Africa Health Initiative. This exemplary training program executed in partnership with the Uganda Malaria Surveillance Project, experts from the University of California San Francisco and other institutes, builds capacity among African healthcare workers in malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. By the end of 2008, over 800 healthcare workers had completed JUMP’s multidisciplinary team-based malaria training at IDI.
JUMP takes an innovative approach to training healthcare professionals in improved malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, by working directly with entire treatment teams at the health facility level and by building the skill sets of all clinic professionals, from medical officers to data entry clerks. JUMP then provides ongoing support and supervision to ensure the implementation of improved skills and practices, through its Mobile Support Teams, which also conduct additional training. The result for the clinic is a more effective staff and a more sustainable system of improved malaria care for its patients.
The Joint Uganda Malaria Training Program also includes novel Mobile Support and On-Going Education Teams that provide assistance to course graduates after they return to their community facilities, help graduates conduct less formal secondary training programs for their peers and colleagues, and collect data to evaluate JUMP’s impact on local health outcomes. This concept proved so effective, that it will also be employed in the Laboratory Training Program and is being considered for IDI’s HIV/AIDS Training Program as well.
In 2007, Accordia and ExxonMobil once again joined forces to improve malaria treatment and diagnosis. ExxonMobil funded an operational research program designed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of an on-site training program incorporating rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) as compared with standard-of-care presumptive treatment, for the management of patients who present with suspected malaria at peripheral health centers in Uganda. Preliminary results indicate that this training substantially reduces the proportion of patients prescribed an antimalarial without adversely affecting outcomes and that substantial cost savings could be achieved by scaling up this program in Uganda. Further research is planned to test the model in other African countries.
Sewankambo Scholarship Program
The Sewankambo Scholarship Program was designed to transition the brightest young Ugandan clinicians into internationally-recognized, independent scholars and researchers. The program creates protected research time, resources, and intensive mentoring opportunities for competitively selected individuals with high potential for success, enabling ambitious candidates at various stages of their career to succeed to degrees not often possible in resource-poor settings.
