What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Protecting Public Health
Antibiotics are meant to be given in precise doses to treat specific types of infections. When they are used on a routine, or regular basis by farming operations, it increases the likelihood that bacteria resistant to the antibiotics will grow and spread, and our life-saving medicines won't work.
Large farming operations and the drug industry have resisted change, and have so far blocked efforts in Washingon. But now, Arizona PIRG is working to convince big restaurants to pressure these farms to change their practices. With our nationwide, we have already convinced McDonald's USA, Subway, and KFC to act.
Protecting Consumers
Arizona PIRG’s consumer program works to alert the public to hidden dangers and scams and to ban anti-consumer practices and unsafe products. We respond to consumer data breaches, share information about dangerous products on store shelves, and work to reduce threats to consumers.
21st Century Transportation
For too many years, Arizona has neglected to adequately invest in public transit, bicycling and pedestrian infrastructure. The failure to provide a 21st Century Transportation system forces many drivers to deal with daily headaches of accidents and stifling traffic jams. Meanwhile, the pollutants from our vehicles contribute to poor air quality, leaving more and more citizens in Arizona - particularly children and seniors - suffering from respiratory illnesses like asthma.
Arizona PIRG is working with community and business leaders, public health and consumer organizations, transportation advocates and concerned citizens to encourage our elected officials to advance a transportation system that meets the needs of the 21st century – one in which public transportation plays a much bigger role than it does today.
