Mission Statement

Haiti Lumiere de Demain was established in 1998 by Louisner Elneus. Reflecting on the many opportunities opened to him by his own education, Mr. Elneus has committed himself to helping reduce the high rates of illiteracy in his homeland. Through Haiti Lumiere de Demain, he hopes to assist a new generation of Haitians to think for themselves and become a positive contributing members of their communities.
Haiti Lumiere de Demain's goals are to: build a system of lending libraries, support activities designed to encourage further learning beyond the classroom, provide books on a lending basis to students in primary school, provide scholarships to both teachers and students for further education.

La Gonave lies less than 20 miles off the west coast of Haiti in the Gulf of Gonave.  Close to Port-au-Prince, La Gonave was less than 30 miles from the epicenter of the catastrophic earthquake of January 12, 2010.  The island is 37 miles long and 9 miles wide and covers an area of 287 square miles. The island is mostly barren and hilly with the highest point reaching 2,552 feet.  Issues of overgrazing and water resource over-exploitation affect the island's approximately 150,000 residents.   The extreme levels of poverty in Haiti are well known and the residents of La Gonave are among Haiti’s poorest.

General Objectives: The main educational objectives of Haiti Lumiere de Demain are to: 1.Focus the organization's efforts on the public primary school system by: a) Giving children greater access to textbooks on a lending basis. The textbooks lending program provides textbooks to more than 3700 underprivileged students. b) Scholarhip Program allows 65 students to further their education through a merit and need based scholarships. c) After School Porgram sponsors after School programs that provide over 500 students with an environment that facilitate and enhance their ability for learning beyond the classroom. 2. Teacher Training builds the capacity of teachers to become better prepared to teach by provinding training on a regular basis. b) Building Libraries provides teachers and students with greater access to reference and educational Materials through a system of Lending Libraries. c) Environmental Education Program sponsors programs that promote environmental protection and sustainability.

BIO

Louisner Elneus is Haiti Lumiere de Demain's founder and president. A native of Haiti, he received his undergraduate degree at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. and is currently pursuing his master's in education. Mr. Elneus worked for a time at the United Nations Association in New York City as assistant policy researcher/ analyst, and at the Lester Pearson Peacekeeping Training Centre in Nova Scotia, Canada.
