Executive Director

Mrs. Kristin Proto

BIO

Kristin Proto became the Executive Director of The Garage Community and Youth Center in May of 2013. She began her employment with The Garage in West Grove, serving as the founding Director in 2011. She holds a Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science and History from University of Pittsburgh, and a Secondary Education certification from St. Joseph's University. Through her work with AmeriCorps, Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, and PathStone Corporation, Kristin has over 11 years experience in the non-profit sector, working with immigrants, refugees, and at-risk youth, while developing educational and work-readiness programs.

Kristin lives in West Grove with her husband Anthony and their daughter Lydia. They enjoy spending time with family, traveling, and working in their slightly outrageous garden.

STATEMENT FROM THE Executive Director

"I am honored to be a part of The Garage Community & Youth Center. This truly is a group who are a second family for many people, myself included. Each day, I am amazed at the talent, animation, tenacity, and character of our students. Our staff and volunteers give selflessly of their time and resources, while hundreds of funders generously provide support for our youth.

As we walk into our 15th year serving the Kennett Square community, and our 5th year in West Grove, there are many things that have changed at The Garage - the colors of our walls, the clothing style of our students, the music on our sound system. However, the things of the utmost importance have remained the same. The Garage continues to serve our community, not only as a haven for students in need, but as a catalyst for youth development and as investors in the next generation of community leaders.

We have grown from a small, grassroots, volunteer-run program, to a central institution of Kennett Square and West Grove. Our centers have grown from one to two, doubling our capacity for after school programs. The Garage imagined, incubated, and launched YoungMoms from a program with five teen mothers to it's own non-profit organization, which has served over 100 pregnant and parenting teen mothers and fathers.

Garage students still face immense challenges; peer pressure, bullying, difficult home environments, language barriers, domestic violence, learning differences, doubt, mistrust, poverty, addiction, or incarceration of a parent. It is our great commission to humbly walk alongside our students in whatever hardships they endure and to love them fiercely regardless of those factors.

In the heart of Kennett Square and West Grove is a community of people whose hearts beat for the youth of our town. We are committed to knowing each one's name and story, and helping them to write the next best chapter of their lives.

Thank you for partnering to promote positive change in our community.

Kristin Proto, Executive Director
