Overview

Self-reported by organization

Association of BellTel Retirees Inc. filed a class-wide administrative claim and demand for documents against Verizon Communications and Idearc/SuperMedia on February 4, 2009. The claim essentially demanded that Verizon retirees, who were involuntarily transferred to Idearc, be returned to the Verizon umbrella. The Claimants who represented the class are three former union and three former management retirees. Case is on-going

Publish a 12 page quarterly newsletter providing essential information to our members.Assisted hundreds of members who have questions and problems getting benefit and pension issues resolved with Verizon and/or Idearc/SuperMedia.

The Association was also advocating shareowners use their “say on pay" power to vote against approving the board's recommended executive compensation package and clarify that key elements of Verizon's executive compensation are not aligned with shareholder interests.  Just 16 percent of the shareowners voted against the compensation package.
Continue to Support ProtectSeniors.Org, in their efforts to pass legislation to protect retiree healthcare. The Association of BellTel Retirees is also working with ProtectSeniors.Org in protecting pensions being sold to insurance companies (pension de-risking).

Pension Stripping

The Association of BellTel Retirees has been working to restore pension protections lost under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC) for the pensions of 41,000 Verizon management retirees -- pensions that were sold to Prudential Insurance at the beginning of 2013. The rules governing these annuities vary state by state, depending on the residence of the annuitant. The corporate world labels this action Pension De-Risking, but PENSION STRIPPING is what it truly is. The Association of BellTel Retirees works alongside ProtectSeniors.Org to bring this serious issue to the attention of our state legislators. We are actively supporting legislation that will restore lost ERISA and PBGC protections and protect retirees from the divide and conquer consequences of Pension Stripping.

President & Executive Director

Mr. John Brennan

BIO

Mr. Jones is the founder and President of the Association of BellTel Retirees Inc. In mid-2002 he assumed the new position of Executive Director. Later his title was changed to President & Executive Director. He led the organization from four people to over 112,000 in 18 years. In that time the Association has had many accomplishments and has become the largest retiree activist group in the world. He has been quoted in numerous news articles, such as: N.Y. Daily News, New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, AARP Bulletin, USA Today, Crain's New York Business and the New York Post. He has also been featured in magazine articles, such as: Fortune, Plan Sponsor, Dollars and Sense, Smart Money, Global Finance, and Business Week. He has participated on radio talk shows on NPR,Tom Pope as well on NBC TV and Bloomberg News.

STATEMENT FROM THE President & Executive Director

"This organization is unique in that it was formed by volunteers and continues after 18 years to be led by an all volunteer board. The Association is the largest retiree corporate activist group in the country. It is also recognized nationally as very effective as a shareholder activist organization. Crain’s New York Business reported on March 28, 2010, “But one asset that  {Verizon} management probably would prefer to do without is its network of former employees, the Association of BellTel Retirees, which has proved to be one of the noisiest – most effective – shareholder advocacy groups around.”

In spite of this reputation, it is important to us to maintain a good business-like relationship with the company. We want Verizon to remain healthy and will do what we can to help when something comes off the track, we help them through our company contacts.

Our mission is to protect and enhance retiree earned pensions and benefits through all means possible. We take this job very seriously. Our members’ financial security is at stake."

ORGANIZATIONAL DEMOGRAPHICS

In order to support nonprofits and gain valuable insight for the sector, GuideStar worked with D5—a five-year initiative to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in philanthropy—in creating a questionnaire. To protect the identity of individuals, we do not display sexual orientation or disability information for organizations with fewer than 15 staff.
