Program 1

The ChildSafe School

The ChildSafe School is a grassroots program offering science-based policy solutions for three environmental exposures common to most schools:

diesel exhaust from idling school buses

chemical toxins from cleaning chemicals

pesticides used on playing fields

We welcome parents, teachers and administrators who share our concern about the alarming increase in the incidence of environmentally-triggered illness in children, including asthma, development disorders and cancer.  Our program is designed to help you bring about change in your school system.

Grassroots Healthy Lawn Program

The Grassroots Healthy Lawn Program (GHLP) is an award-winning environmental educational project designed to reshape the market forces of supply and demand for natural lawn care by simultaneously training land care professionals and educating the public about market alternatives.

The project was conceived and developed by Grassroots Environmental Education, a non-profit organization based in Port Washington, Long Island. The pilot program was first introduced in Westchester County, NY in 2004, with the support and assistance of the Westchester County government and County Executive Andy Spano. The program has since been expanded to include Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.

BIO

Ms. Wood is a visiting scholar at Adelphi University where she lectures on environmental exposures and related health issues in the School of Nursing. Ms. Wood also works with the Environmental Health Division of the New York State Department of Health producing public information materials and was recently appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Sustainability and Green Procurement.  Ms. Wood is the co-producer of the documentary film “Our Children at Risk,” which explores the latest scientific research linking environmental toxins to children's health problems.  She is the author of “The ChildSafe Guidelines” and “The ChildSafe School,” which promote and provide a framework for  a comprehensive approach to reducing environmental toxins in schools.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"We believe that the cultivation of broad-based public support through education is the key to bringing about positive and lasting change. Our programs are based on science, and our network of environmental experts includes leaders in the field from Yale, Columbia and Tufts Universities, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and other similar institutions. Using cutting-edge communication techniques, we strive to shape public opinion on environmental health issues in communities across the country by developing materials and programs that bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding.

"Real change in environmental health will come from the bottom up, not the top down," says Doug. "This is a case where the leaders will follow if the people will lead. Our mission is to help the people lead.""
