Mission Statement

Nativity
Mission Center
is one of the three schools overseen by New York Nativity. Nativity is a
community comprised of students, families, teachers, administrators, board
members, and supporters, founded and continued in the Jesuit tradition and
committed to providing a new birth of hope for the economically deprived young
people of this area. In all of our programs and services, Nativity strives to
instill in our students: -A sense of the excitement and value of learning; -A
commitment to the simultaneous development of their intellectual, social, moral,
and spiritual dimensions; -A sense of obligation to use one's gifts and talents
in service for others. With our favorable seven to one student/faculty ratio,
Nativity today provides our students with access to highly focused educational
opportunities which are tailored to the individual needs and abilities of each
boy. Nativity seeks to counterbalance the pressure on these youngsters to
become involved in the temptations of the street by challenging and encouraging
them to reach their potential. Nativity's program consists of three integrated
components designed to meet the needs of inner city youngsters: -The Middle
School Program -Summer Leadership Camp -Graduate Support Services and
Scholarship Fund.

Program 1

Middle School Program

The Nativity Mission School is a boys' middle
school, enrolling students in the sixth through eighth grades. Nativity helps
its boys to develop personal value systems and acquire basic academic skills.
Small class sizes, an extended day lasting from 8:00 am to 8:15 pm, flexible
scheduling, and a committed teaching team led by three master teachers assist
in achieving these goals. Students receive opportunities for individual
guidance, and those with particular needs can receive tutoring from volunteers.
All eighth grade students receive assistance in selecting their secondary
schools. Nativity's students are also provided with teacher-supervised
afternoon and evening study halls four days a week.

Program 2

Summer Leadership Training Program

The Summer Leadership Training Program, consisting of seven
weeks at Camp Monserrate
in Lake Placid, New York, is required of all middle-school
students. This program affords additional time for academic instruction,
character development, leadership development, and the teaching of
team-building skills. Students have a chance to reinforce what they learn
during the academic year. Prospective students are invited to the camp to be
introduced to Nativity and so that Nativity can be sure they have the
motivation and enthusiasm necessary to complete the three years of intensive
work in the middle school. The "spirit of camp" both prepares new
students for the rigors of Nativity's academic program and reinvigorates the
returning students.

Scholarship Support and Graduate Support Services

Nativity
has two scholarship funds: the "In School Scholarship Fund"
subsidizes those students currently attending the middle school, and the
Graduate Support Scholarship Fund offers financial assistance to families of
middle-school graduates who are attending private secondary schools. Nativity
works with students on financial-aid applications for high school; once
students receive aid packages, Nativity works out a viable plan in which the
family contributes according to their ability and the school, insofar as
resources permit, provides any necessary remaining funds. Nativity's
relationships with its students do not end when they receive eighth-grade
diplomas. When they reach eighth grade, Nativity staff work with each boy to
determine what high school will provide him with the most supportive and
educationally stimulating environment. Once he begins high school, he has
access to the services of our Graduate Support Program. Directed by a Nativity
alumnus, the program is a principal source of academic help, guidance, and peer
support. It offers all graduates supervised afternoon and evening study halls
four days a week, with access to computers, books, and individual tutoring. In
addition, juniors and seniors receive assistance with financial aid forms and
can participate in an SAT-prep course and college visits.
