What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
50 Sates/50 Cities Project
50 States/50 Cities Project: Thunderhead's 50 States/50 Cities Project focuses our member services (including Thunderhead Trainings, direct trainings, on-call support system and web resource library) to ensure that all 50 states and at least the 50 highest population U.S. cities are represented by effective and sustainable bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. Complete the Streets Campaign: We have set a goal of winning complete streets policies in all 50 states by the year 2008 by guiding our member organizations through effective campaigns. Complete streets are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and bus riders of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street. Complete streets policies ensure that all new construction and reconstruction transportation projects result in complete streets. Benchmarking: The results of our next Benchmarking Report on all 50 states and the 50 largest U.S. cities will help us determine where our organizational development resources are most needed. Our Benchmarking Reports (updated every other year) will also reveal needed improvements in bicycling and walking data collection. Our next report will include new data sets for pedestrians, health and underserved populations to be added to the bicycle mode share, crashes and funding data we compiled and compared in our first Benchmarking Report. Find our first Benchmarking Report at: www.biketraffic.org/benchmarking Affordable Transportation for Affordable Housing: We are currently bringing together partners for our first pilot project. This pilot will create a replicable model for our member organizations that partners them with local Community Development Corporations (CDCs) to bring true bicycle and pedestrian access to affordable housing developments. Thunderhead organizations will bring their local expertise in bicycle and pedestrian transportation systems and programs as the CDCs focus on their expertise for the development. Active Prescription: Thunderhead's Active Prescription program, which will become one of our replicable models, builds on a highly successful Australian model that paired doctors with a bicycle advocacy organization. With Thunderhead's Active Prescription program, when a participating doctor prescribes activity to a patient at risk from obesity and/or diabetes, that patient will get their prescription filled at their local Thunderhead organization. They will engage in a rigorous full year program which pairs them with a bike or walk buddy and monitors their progress through weekly reports. Community Bike Programs: Thunderhead is offering our networking and capacity building expertise to these programs across the country. These non-profit bike shops take in donated bikes and offer job training to troubled youth who can earn their own bicycle as they learn mechanics and business management. These programs will be an important part of our Affordable Transportation for Affordable Housing program. We also see enormous potential in these programs for bringing bicycling into the lives of people positively affected by the advocacy efforts of our member organizations.
