How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

We reach and impact hundreds of communities worldwide, over
820 to date! We have a new book on the topic – download it free at http://GreenMathe Open Green
Map, in June 2009. Today, 23,000 green sites have been added by local Green Map projects. Each map is open to public viewpoints,
images, assessments and site suggestions. Designed to lower technical and
financial barriers to participation, the Open Green Map is transforming local
information into global interaction. It's attracted many new participants and
our global network of locally-led projects is growing 25% faster than
ever. In 2010, we added a mobile website, iPhone App and widgets that share the 300+ Open Green Maps on myriad websites and blogs.

In 2009, we also published
the Green Map Impacts book mentioned above; mentored more than a dozen interns
and released the exciting new mapping modules found at http://GreenMaand
created/participated in numerous public events.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

As of 12/08, the Green Map network included over 500 locally-led Green Map projects worldwide. 360+ Green Maps have been published, in print and online! Diverse projects in 50 countries and their outcomes -- adult-led, youth, citywide, neighborhood-focused, etc. are described and linked at GreenMathis presentation - collaboration - tool center serves an ever-expanding audience, including 1,200 new visitors each day. We updated all our tools in 2007, too, assisting Mapmakers of all ages in communities, organizations, agencies, schools and universities, and provide assistance on research, design, publication, outreach, fundraising and other essential tasks. In 2008, we completed a five year inclusive process to update our award-winning iconography. We began creating the OpenGreenManow in preview, to involve significantly more people around the world. Green Map System also continually produces new local NYC Green Maps that function as models for city-wide and childrens mapping projects elsewhere, as seen at GreenAppleMap.org.

Youth Engagement

Our youth tools have been in continual development since 1998, and as you can see at http://GreenMachildren in 20 countries have utilized them to date. With assessments underway and multiple demands and requests, we plan to increase youth capacity to analyze, chart and draw attention to their community's vital environmental, climate and social needs with scalable, adaptable and interactive resources.

Program 4

Social Entrepreneurship & CSR

Social Entrepreneurship: Here, our concern is twofold. First, to collaboratively develop a new ‘solidarity economy’ revenue model that helps Green Map System and local Green Map projects become financially sustainable by examining and replicating best practices amongst our worldwide network. And second, to develop our nascent Company Green Map and Social Responsibility program to help businesses chart a greener future for themselves, their employees and their neighbors. We are already making contributions to corporate efficiencies, culture change and greening as seen at http://GreenMap.org/csr.

Funding Needs

With new local project leaders joining the movement every 3 days, we need to increase our staff's capacity to support them. Our regional Hubs need help to mentor local efforts, translate materials and respond to educator, media and policymakers requests, too. Help us do more to meet local needs and give every community fresh directions to a sustainable future! Youth, Climate Impacts, Social Entrepreneurship, New Revenue Model, CSR and strengthening our Open Green Map are all program elements that need funding support. Specifics for one example: Open Green Map: Launched in June 2009, nearly 100 maps were published in the first 5 months - clearly this is a much-needed resource! Help us add more languages, tools for youth and grassroots users, mobile phone versions, widgets and other map sharing and social networking tools.
