What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
AART Young Actors' Theatre
Theatrically gifted children who often don't have an opportunity to receive professional training have an opportunity to gain the knowledge, tools, skills, and support to realize their potential. During a three week summer course or a twelve week after school program, youth from ages 7 through 18 are trained in both performing arts and technical theater. Diverse segments of the community claim as their own a professional theatre that through the medium of entertainment, offers a tangible source of pride and hope in the future of Richmond.
Emerging Artist Theatre Project
Local playwrights are given an opportunity to submit a one-act work to be judged and possibly chosen for performance by a professional theater company. Playwrights are given an opportunity to sit down with a professionally published playwright who will work with them in making the script "stage-ready."
Jazz Actor Workshop
Acting classes utilizing the Jazz Acting Method, pioneered by the late Ernie McClintock, will be offered over an eight week period.
Main Stage Theater Season
Our performing season consists of four professionally produced main stage shows -- two plays and a musical. Shows produced are those giving the African American perspective. We utilize professional talent and offer opportunities for audiences to see art not regularly seen in the mainstream theater community. Such a season requires hiring professional actors, designers as well as procuring a suitable venue.
