Mission Statement

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has been a primary resource for research on New York families since 1869. By offering educational programs, scholarly and informational publications, and online resources, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society helps people of all backgrounds build connections with their families and their communities -- especially those linked to New York City, State, and region -- and to appreciate their families' experience in the broader context of American history. The NYG&B maintains an eLibrary of unique digital material, including the entire run of its quarterly scholarly journal The NYG&B Record, for its members at www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org.

Through the New York Family History School, the NYG&B partners with other genealogical and historical societies, repositories, and organizations to deliver and promote awareness of education programs that assist people to improve their research skills and to expand their knowledge of resources for genealogical research.

New York State Family History Conference

The New York Genealogical Society and Biographical Society partnered with the Central New York Genealogical Society to cosponsor the first statewide genealogical conference in New York in September 2013. The Conference will become a biennial event.

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record

The NYG&B Record has been published quarterly since 1870. It is recognized as the most important journal for New York genealogical research and features compiled genealogies, solutions to problems, unique source material,and book reviews.

The NYG&B maintains a collection of unique digital resources for its members, which includes: the entire run of its quarterly scholarly journal; original guides to using newspapers, maps, and other resources for New York research; more than 100 Research Aid articles on key topics in New York genealogy; a growing collection of guides to doing genealogical research in New York counties; special collections, including: cemetery transcriptions, religious records, and bible records that are unique to the NYG&B; digital books from the WPA Historical Records Survey and the NYG&B Collections; the 1855 State Census for Manhattan’s 17th Ward; and more.

New York Family History Research Guide and Gazetteer

Then NYG&B will soon publish the New York Family History Research Guide and Gazetteer, the first comprehensive guide to researching New York families in all 62 counties of New York State. More than 100 historians, genealogists, archivists, and librarians have contributed their expertise to the book, which will include the first gazetteer of New York place-names (past and present) in more than 100 years.
