Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
POLITICS & ELECTIONS
This area of Truthout’s coverage encompasses a broad range of issues. It includes coverage of elections in the U.S. and abroad, high-stakes legislation, developments in the courts, far right movements, dark money players in Washington and elsewhere, and other attacks on democracy.
PRISONS & POLICING
A particularly strong area of Truthout’s coverage, this section is focused on issues related to prisons and jails, as well as all forms of policing. It is home to three active abolition-focused series: “The Road to Abolition”; a collaborative long-form feature, “Abolition in Action”; and a collaborative video series explaining restorative justice and violence interruption strategies. Other coverage in this section includes pieces authored by incarcerated writers and reports on conditions behind bars (including firsthand accounts of solitary confinement), the U.S.’s war on drugs, and movements that are creating non-carceral alternatives.
ECONOMY & LABOR
Economy & Labor spans a wide range of coverage, including Truthout’s expansive original reporting on strikes, unionization efforts and labor issues more generally (including the fight for a living wage); issues of inequality, both in the U.S. and abroad; coverage of taxes, including tax breaks that benefit the wealthy and corporate tax dodgers; attacks on the social safety net; Wall Street malfeasance; analyses critiquing the impacts of capitalism; Federal Reserve developments; and the effects of (and resistance to) the stranglehold of debt on the Global South.
RACIAL JUSTICE
Truthout’s work on racial justice examines both current news and history with a racial justice lens that challenges white supremacy. In addition to close reporting and analysis of the impact of racism on each of the U.S.’s major institutions, we work to uplift racial justice movements through our journalism. This includes in-depth coverage of contemporary movements for Black liberation and Indigenous sovereignty; efforts to confrontanti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and antisemitic attacks; the battle for inclusive education; the push for reparations; and the battle for voting rights for all, among other issues.
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
This program houses articles related to the climate crisis, including reports on the latest predictions from climate experts, proposals for a mass move toward clean energy and a just transition, and extensive coverage of movements for climate action. Environment & Health also covers environmental justice at the local level, such as communities resisting pollution and contamination, grassroots efforts to ban fracking, and struggles for accountability and cleanup in “sacrifice zones.” Additionally, this section covers other health-related news, such as the push for inclusive health care, policy developments related to COVID-19, the impacts of industrial agriculture, and the dangers of the widespread “forever chemicals” known as PFAS.
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
This program is dedicated to reproductive rights and the movement for reproductive justice. In a post-Roe era, Reproductive Rights monitors developments in the courts and at the local level around access to abortion and contraception amid large-scale attacks, maternal health, and movements for bodily autonomy. Our Reproductive Rights work also sheds a light on the impacts of forced sterilization, the damages wrought by the family policing system, and the intersections of economic justice and reproductive justice.
LGBTQ RIGHTS
From the fight for gender-affirming health care, to the push for inclusive education, to debunking dangerous anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policies, this section focuses on the struggle for LGBTQ rights amid mounting attacks on them, and follows developments in legislation and court rulings. In addition to covering attacks from the right, our work in this realm goes further, shedding light on the limits of narrow legal frameworks and imagining what true LGBTQ liberation would look like.
EDUCATION & YOUTH
This program spans a broad scope of coverage, including attacks on higher education, the movement for student debt forgiveness, the struggle for inclusive curricula amid increasing censorship and book bans, the dark money that funds so-called “parents’ rights” groups, the child care crisis, the push to privatize education, the renewed movement to resurrect child labor, and more. Education & Youth houses Truthout’s “Challenging the Corporate University” series, which examines corporatized higher education and offers perspectives on how we might pursue a more equitable model of education. This section also offers fresh analysis imagining the potential of real education justice.
HUMAN RIGHTS
The Human Rights program houses an expansive range of articles, with both domestic and international focuses. This includes the movement for disability justice, the struggle for Palestinian liberation in all its forms, victims of torture in the U.S. and abroad, the push for housing as a human right, the devastating effects of sanctions on populations around the world, and the human toll taken by mass divestment from impoverished communities worldwide.
IMMIGRATION
Truthout’s Immigration coverage examines the geographically long-reaching effects of U.S. immigration policy, the human and monetary costs of the U.S.-Mexico border wall and the surveillance that surrounds it, the ongoing struggle for migrant rights, the colonialism-driven conditions that drive people to migrate to the U.S., and the movement to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and all of its migrant jails. The stories in this section uplift the humanity of migrants and the real harm wrought by the U.S.’s deadly policies.
