GEA has led engagement and advocacy efforts that have yielded deep investment and new capacity in our public schools. GEA has raised funds for start-up costs for early and middle colleges, professional development for principals, student incentives in academics and service learning, and awards for outstanding teachers and principals. Thousands of GEA volunteers have supported our schools through the Teacher Supply Warehouse, advocacy efforts, and in-school programs such as Community Readers. GEA publications, on-line communications, and issue briefings provide community members with information they need to understand front burner issues and participate in decision making.

The GEA Board has served as a private sector, confidential and strategic “brain trust" for the Superintendent and has demonstrated ability to make a “Big Idea" happen. GEA was one of the four local partners, along with GCS and the High Point and Greensboro Community Foundations that led the effort to build the Say Yes Guilford collaborative.

Program 1

Teacher Supply Warehouse

The Teacher Supply Warehouse (TSW) was created in 2008 to help give teachers and students supplies they need for success in the classroom and to give businesses a place to donate materials that can be recycled into classrooms instead of being thrown away and ending up in the landfill. Businesses can donate outdated letterhead, binders and folders, items left over from a trade show, post-it notes, etc. to the TSW and then teachers are invited to “shop” for items they can use in their classrooms at no charge. The Warehouse also accepts donations of new supplies from businesses and individuals. Since the TSW has been open, more than $1 million worth of donated materials has been recycled and used in classrooms, providing students and teachers with much needed supplies.

  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
    Our Board, which includes the Chair of the Board of Education and School Superintendent, is closely and strategically aligned with our public school district. We don't deliver services to students and families, but rather engage the community in support of our schools. We raise money for strategic school system priorities not funded with public dollars. We provide direct support to district teachers. Advocacy is focused largely at the county level. We leverage information and resources from trusted state-wide partners to also engage in state issues, especially with the Guilford County delegation. We are also establishing an advisory board for the Teacher Supply Warehouse to engage a broader group of leaders in GEA oversight.

    We are a lean organization with a small staff. Operating lean allows us to direct resources to priorities of the school system as we have in the past and are now with Say Yes. Staying lean requires us to leverage more volunteer, contract and partner support. Tapping experienced and generous contractors for special projects allows us big capacity for relatively low dollars.
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
    Statistics related to each of the following areas will help us determine the effectiveness of our strategies
    * Number of outreach calls (in person and on phone) by key GEA leaders to local elected officials.
    * Level of county funding for schools compared to request
    * Level of county funding for schools compared to previous years
    * GCS student enrollment
    * Enrollment in charter schools located in Guilford County
    * Participation in GEA core programs (ELA, Ed Summit, Community Readers, Principal for a Day, TSW) compared to previous years
    * Social media and email response and activity reports (opens, click-throughs, shares, unsubscribe, new subscribers)
    * Results of community polling and surveys conducted by private firm contracted by GCS


  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
    GEA has engaged our community in support of quality public education. Community support has helped encourage our local delegation to keep school funding the same or increase it over the past five years when many districts suffered budget cuts. Bringing the community together has also resulted in attracting Say Yes to Education to expand to Guilford County.

    “Guilford Education Alliance has served as a critical convener and relationship broker in our community — playing a key role in successfully bringing Say Yes to Education to Guilford County," Kevin Lundy, Program Officer at The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, said in his successful nomination of GEA for the 2015 Nonprofit of the Year.
    “There is no question that really strong public education is critical for our whole community," said Nathan Duggins, GEA Vice Chair. “Whether that's tackling a tough issue like diversity in our schools or bringing something like Say Yes to this community — (the Alliance) has done it by bringing people together around a common table," Duggins said.
    “The school system is huge, and so it has to have structure to hold that size," McGregor says. “We can be a more lean and nimble partner and together, with the community's help, facilitate creative, innovative solutions to challenges."

    As economic development work gets really connected through Business HighP and GSO Partnership SY to Ed is creating opportunity for community to connect to public schools. GEA is the community's resource to stay connected with education issues and how education is critically tied to economic development. We are building strategic relationships with elected leaders to help everyone understand perspectives. Policies issues are complicated. GEA helps provide information around the complex education and funding issues. We would like to reach an even wider audience.

    One thing we hear from school leaders as top issue/challenge is attracting and retaining talent. While the state is increasing salaries, our local supplement is much lower than comparable areas like Charlotte and Raleigh which have much lower poverty levels. So in addition to competing with other states like Virginia, South Carolina and Tennessee, Guilford County Schools also competes with other counties right down the road. Attention being paid to how to attract and retain teachers and principals. GEA is working to help create an atmosphere for educators to feel like they are making a difference and can help them be motivated to stay.

Funding Needs

Need 1: For over a decade, GEA has led community engagement and advocacy efforts that have yielded deep and wide public investment and new capacity in our public schools. Given the political and policy dynamic in our county, in NC and across the country, the rising poverty in Guilford County, and the surge of competition for public school districts from charters and voucher programs, our public school system is nearing a critical tipping point. It is yet to be seen whether we can avoid the fate of systems in other parts of the country who passed the tipping point and slid back to a place from which it will be perhaps impossible to rebuild and, if possible, the timeline will be long and costly. The Say Yes initiative has created an opportunity in Guilford County for there to be different kind of outcome. There is a kind of "stickiness" that we are finding now in the community for issues and messages we have been working to draw attention to for some time. It is precisely the time when an organization like GEA -- working in concert with partners and in the context of the community's focus on a transformative opportunity like Say Yes -- can be most effective and shift the trajectory. Our programs and activities all contribute to this work, so our major need is for general operating support. Need 2: The Teacher Supply Warehouse (TSW) is a way to directly support GCS teachers who shop at no charge for thousands of items, donated through supply drives and purchased with donations. This is our most tangible and practical program that is accessed throughout the year by teachers at all levels. Funding is needed for its general operation and to purchase supplies in addition to what is donated through generous community partners.

MS. Winston McGregor

BIO

Winston has worked in the non-profit and political arena for 27 years with a focus on organizational growth and public-private partnerships. In 2013 she joined Guilford Education Alliance as Executive Director. In that role she also served as a lead coordinator in developing Guilford County's partnership with Say Yes to Education. Committed to building communities that offer authentic opportunities for everyone to reach their potential, Winston is a passionate advocate for public education and especially Guilford County Schools.
Previously, she spent a decade with Habitat Greensboro. While serving as President and Executive Director of one of Habitat's largest U.S. affiliates, Winston led the organization through a period of extraordinary growth. A 1989 graduate of American University in Washington, DC, she spent the 1990s in various fundraising and political roles for first U.S. Senator and then Vice President Al Gore.
