Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Envirofit's first product is a direct injection (DI) retrofit kit for two-stoke engines that significantly improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. Commonly used to power taxis throughout cities in Asia, two-stroke engines are one of the largest sources of vehicular emissions in the world. ADB estimates that there are nearly 100 million two-stroke vehicles in Southeast Asia - each producing approximately 50 times the pollution of a modern automobile. Envirofit has engaged in extensive field testing and market development in the Philippines, and we are now selling our kit in this market.
Developed in partnership with Synerject and Orbital Engine Company, Envirofit?s retrofit technology reduces carbon monoxide emissions by 76%, carbon dioxide emissions by 26%, and hydrocarbon emissions by 89%. At the same time, fuel consumption is reduced by 35% and oil consumption by 50%. Not only does this help the driver and all of us breathe a little easier, but the driver?s income is also increased. The kit costs $350, but the annual fuel and oil savings are nearly $470 (120 gallons per unit). Thus, the kit pays for itself within a year, and - for a typical driver earning $1500 per year - this represents a 33% increase in annual income. Moreover, a typical unit can run for 15-20 years.
The Philippines is home to 1.8 million two-stroke vehicles. The WHO estimates that each year, in the country?s four largest cities, particulate emissions produce 2000 premature deaths and an economic burden of $430 million. In 2003, a Philippine NGO approached Envirofit requesting DI technology to mitigate the country?s air pollution problem. Envirofit now has two projects underway to retrofit the entire fleet of two-stroke tricycle taxis in Vigan and Puerto Princesa, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Currently, the only viable solutions to carbureted two-stroke engine pollution are: (1) replacing the entire vehicle with one powered by a four-stroke (2) converting the existing two-stroke engine to direct injection via the Envirofit retrofit kit. Replacing a vehicle is not economically feasible for the majority; moreover, there are always willing buyers for used two-strokes.
Envirofit will manage these two projects through 2008, during which we anticipate retrofitting 4000 vehicles. This will result annually in increasing drivers? incomes by almost $1.9 million, conserving nearly 500,000 gallons of oil, and reducing CO2 emissions by 4000 tons. These results will continue for the entire life of each vehicle. Envirofit?s capacity-building efforts will also result in the direct creation of local jobs. Starting in 2009 we will exit the projects in Vigan and Puerto Princesa, transitioning the self-financing venture to local partners. Envirofit has already begun to replicate this project in new markets.
Our other programs include:
Efficient Cook Stove
With over two billion people cooking with solid fuel, indoor air pollution is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. The majority of these people also lack access to electrical power. Envirofit?s close relationship with Colorado State University?s Global Innovation Center for Energy, Environment and Health (GIC) provides access to a highly efficient stove with the unique ability to produce electricity, which can then be used for lighting and communications. Field tests are underway and, if successful, Envirofit intends to commercialize this technology.
Cleaner Diesel
Diesel fuel accounts for approximately 40% of all road fuels worldwide, and in many countries, diesel has surpassed gasoline as the primary transport energy source. Ultra-fine particle emissions from diesel engines have been linked to a range of respiratory, cardiovascular and other health problems. Collaborative research between the GIC and EECL has identified several potentially viable solutions. Envirofit intends to begin field tests of the most promising technologies.
