Mission Statement

PEMA CHOLING INSTITUTE is a residential Buddhist community of 100 women and girls aged 12 - 60 located in the Bumthang region of Bhutan. Many of the women arrive at Pema Choling with little or no education, from families of farmers or road laborers. The center offers basic education, vocational training and the opportunity to pursue traditional Buddhist studies at the highest academic level. Founded in 2000, the Institute contains the first shedra (Buddhist college) for women in the history of Bhutan allowing them to receive traditional education on a par with the greatest Buddhist learning centers for men in all of India and the Himalayas.

Program 1

Pema Choling USA raises funds to support the education, support and training of 100 women and girls at the Institute. The hope is to eventually expand to accomodate 500 women. Education includes both basic secular education and Buddhist philosophical and historical training. Vocational training includes learning the various traditional arts of Bhutan which encourages the ability of the women to be self-supporting and also sustains their culture heritage. Running the center themselves, the residents are also acquiring administrative skills. The women of the institute are currently also participating in a major building project to provide much needed dorms and classrooms. The background gained at Pema Choling will enable the residents to become teachers and/or skilled artisans and allow them to train or teach other young women or return to help the people living in their native villages. All of their education and training can eventually benefit women and girls throughout Bhutan. Pema Choling USA's only function is to raise funds to help support any and all of these programs at Pema Choling Institute.
