How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

Our main goal is to give our students the skills they need to get decent jobs. Currently 60% of our graduate students are employed. In a society where young women do not have much control over their lives we are making an unintentional impact - learning marketable computer skills with the objective of earning a salary not only benefits the family but also has the effect of delaying marriage. Young women who work and contribute to the family economically are able to delay marriage and sometimes their economic power gives them the right of making other decisions about their lives.

Principal Officer

Ms. Alison Saracena

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"For 10 years I have lived in Calcutta working with the students of Uddami, first in the school and then in the outsourcing venture that is staffed by our graduates and helps to support the school.

I am convinced that the ultimate goal of development projects like ours should be to give training, support and opportunities so that the people we work with can lift themselves out of poverty.

Along with my husband Bryan (an unpaid volunteer without whom Uddami wouldn't exist), I am in the process of passing the school and the outsourcing venture into the hands of the graduates who have been working with us for the last five years. My aim is to make both of us unnecessary - if I can do this I will know that I have succeeded in doing what I came to Calcutta to do - empower people in the true sense of that word.

Alison Saracena, founder of Uddami"
