Mission Statement

Every day in San Diego, thousands of children return to an empty home after school. When the school bell rings, the anxiety for parents often just begins. They worry about whether their children are safe or whether they are susceptible to drugs and crime. In response to this pressing concern, many local communities have created after-school programs to keep children and youth out of trouble and engaged in activities that help them learn. However, a chronic shortage of quality after-school programs exists. One recent study found that there was only placement for approximately half the number of kids needing after school programs, and many of those programs are far too expensive for the majority of the most at risk children. After-school programs provide a wide array of benefits to children, their families, schools, and the community as a whole - improved multi-discipline learning, reduced participation in higher risk behaviors, increased community pride - just to name a few. The Studio Academy was founded on the belief that every youth interested in The Arts should have the opportunity to receive the highest quality education available; and, that this kind of facility must be accessible to all youth with the drive and ambition to pursue such an education and experience. Our mission is 'to empower, motivate, and inspire our students by providing fun, educational, and interactive programs in an environment where they may: express creativity while exploring their talents and imaginations, target their skills, and build upon their strengths.'

Program 1

Our talented faculty and sophisticated equipment are made easily accessible to the youth we serve at our studio location in La Jolla, through after-school programs' held on-location at various school campuses throughout the Greater San Diego Area'and via our series of camps' held at assorted community centers like YMCAs and public libraries throughout the community. We provide all youth interested in The Arts with a place to go that promotes freedom of artistic expression, freedom of choice, and encourages further development of skills and talents, while helping to improve self-reliance, self-esteem, confidence, and personal satisfaction. In our film program, students learn from top professionals in the industry who teach them how to screen write, storyboard, direct, produce, film, edit, and act for any level or type of film and stage production. Through our fine arts program, students study art history along with a variety of techniques and styles used in art. Classes are offered in fine arts, painting, drawing, and sculpture as well as 'mommy and me' and 'daddy and me' art classes for stay-at-home parents. We also offer our students instruction in theater, modern dance, hip-hop dance, martial arts, music, and voice. In these courses, instructors not only focus on history and technique, but also on strengthening the students' self-image, communications skills, mind, and body. By providing services in after-school and camp environments, we are also providing an educational, creative safe-haven for students to learn and express themselves. Many of the youth we serve would otherwise be left with no activity to enrich their lives and keep them off the streets during the critical hours in which most youth are unsupervised by responsible adults, leading them to engage in risky activities and behaviors. And, by providing education in The Arts on-location at school campuses, we are able to supplement the recent decline in funding afforded for such programs in the public school curriculum and bring necessary and important arts to youth who do not have an opportunity for exposure to The Arts in their current circumstances. The Studio Academy is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization founded by a minority woman, with a board of minority women, whose goal is to bring art education and experience to people that have not traditionally had access to it due to various social and economic reasons. We, at The Studio Academy, feel that when a community is lacking in something that is vital to its existence that it is the duty of its citizens to step up and fulfill that need, and that in the end is the final goal of The Studio Academy.
