Generation Rwanda's primary initiative, Kepler, is still largely in the experimental phase, but after only one year of operations, 20% of its students have earned their A.A. from our accreditation partner, Southern New Hampshire University. This is compared to the average in the United States, where only 20% of all community college students complete their A.A. degrees within two years.

We have also engaged the research firm IDinsight to test Kepler students in areas such as critical thinking, cognitive skills, English language proficiency, and computer literacy. They will be monitored against a control group at other Rwandan universities.

University scholarship, training, and support

Comprehensive University Scholarships. Generation Rwanda is the only nonprofit organization in sub-Saharan Africa working to help extremely talented orphans and socially vulnerable young people obtain a university degree and ultimately become leaders. We currently support 120 students who major in diverse fields of study at the top universities in Rwanda.

We approach our students' education holistically: in addition to funding university tuition, GR promotes each student's academic, personal, and professional success by providing services such as housing, healthcare, language & computer training, and tutoring. To help our students realize their professional ambitions, GR recently launched a career development program that matches students with internships at local businesses and nonprofit organizations. The internship initiative provides students with professional skills and increases their employment opportunities, while also teaching the value of work experience prior to graduation.

  1. What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
    Generation Rwanda's goals are to:

    • Increase access to higher education in Africa through its low cost, high quality university model, Kepler
    • Directly enroll thousands of students at Kepler's Rwanda campus
    • Inspire and assist new and existing universities to adopt aspects of the Kepler model into their own curriculums
  2. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
    Generation Rwanda's mission is to expand access to excellent higher education for students coming from communities of need. To do this, we are:

    • Building a student educational financing mechanism to enable our model to scale up with financial  sustainability, a portion of our students will always need some financial support
    • Expanding access to higher education not just in Rwanda, but also at campuses across Africa by opening additional campuses in the years to come—as well as consulting with other institutions to adopt aspects of Kepler's blended learning model.
    • Using independent research to measure the impact of our approach, to help us improve our model, and then to share transparently our findings. We want to figure out what works in higher education in the developing world and make it 100% open source.
  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
    Generation Rwanda is led by a team of experts in education, technology, and international development.

    Additionally, Kepler is partnered with some of the best nonprofit organizations in the world, including Kiva (student lending), IKEA Foundation (funding), and Southern New Hampshire University (accreditation).
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
    To measure the success of the Kepler program, Generation Rwanda looks at the following indicators:

    Enrollment: How many students we are able to serve
    Graduation: How many students are able to graduate in a timely manner
    Employment: How many students are able to secure jobs within months of graduating
    Indirect impact: Whether other universities are adapting aspects of the Kepler model in order to lower cost and raise quality
  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
    Generation Rwanda presently enrolls 150 students at its Kepler Kigali campus, and will double enrollment in 2015. Nearly 100% are on track to receive their A.A. degrees within two years and B.A. degrees within 3-4 years. Because of the delayed nature of higher education, we do not yet know how our students will fare on the job market. However, a major aspect of Kepler's curriculum is being co-developed with Rwandan employers, and the skills students receive at Kepler should give them a significant leg up on their peers.

Mr. Chris Hedrick


Chris is an expert in international development, learning, technology, and global health. At Kepler, he is based in Kigali, where he focuses on developing a massively scalable model for low cost, high quality higher education across Africa.

Before joining Kepler, Chris was the Country Director for the Peace Corps in Senegal, the largest Peace Corps program in the world, where he also led their malaria control efforts throughout Africa. Before this, Chris built a corporate blended learning venture, Intrepid, from founding to large scale. He was also an early leader of the Gates Foundation and developed Microsoft's national philanthropic initiatives.

A graduate of Stanford University and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Chris has been an elected public school board director, a university Board Chair, and Board Treasurer of PATH, the largest nonprofit recipient of Gates Foundation funding.
