How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

Through our web site, Google Adwords, and meetings with potential teachers, we recruit teachers of missionary children and conduct professional development activities for teachers who teach these children.  The Statcounter on our web site and the analyticis on the Adwords provides evidence of channeling prospective teachers to relevant organizations.  We are developing a vision trip for recruiters of teachers of missionary children.  We are improving our Facebook page since many visitors to our web site exit there.  We are working to improve communication links with major missionary organizations who send out teachers (Wycliffe Bible Translators, Africa Inland Mission, New Tribes Ministry, Service in Mission, etc.  We word with a few Christian universities (Seattle Pacific University, Biola University, Wheaton College, and Master's College).  We work with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship in welcoming professors from secular universities to work with us in recruitment of teachers.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Recruitment of teachers of missionary children

This program has several parts.  The parts include the following:

Web
site

The
Teachers In Service web site is the location of a lot of information useful to
prospective MK teachers. Among the
items it contains are video clips of interviews with MK teachers and administrators
and parents of MKs, addresses of mission organizations who send out teachers,
MK schools in need of teachers, and FAQs. http://www.teachers-in-service.org/

Google
Adwords

We
are conducting an experiment to see if running an advertisement for MK teachers
through Google Adwords makes a significant difference in actual recruitment of
teachers.

Vision
trip for recruiters of MK teachers

A
vision trip is planned for June 2012 to Kenya as part of a training program for
recruiters of MK teachers. A grant proposal submitted through Wheaton college
will help defray some of the vision trip costs. http://www.teachers-in-service.org/vision_trithus permitting them to complete the
application process with mission organizations who send out teachers. It is our feeling that this program
when funded would provide teachers to fill the 600 vacancies that currently
exist. http://www.teachers-in-service.org/project_edsend_for_the_pursuit_of_funding.php

Intervarsity
Christian Fellowship

We
are working with faculty/graduate student division of IVCF to have them point
prospective teachers on secular college campuses to the TIS web site.

Facebook

The
TIS Facebook account is being improved to interface better with the TIS web site. URL

Networking
with mission agencies and universities

Each
year we meet with teacher recruiters at a conference to discuss recruitment
tactics teacher recruiters from Wycliffe Bible Translators, Africa Inland
Mision, Service in Mission, New Tribes Mission, Missionary Avaition Fellowship,
etc.. TIS does not process in any
way prospective teachers. Rather,
it provides information, consultation, and routes inquiries to mission agencies
or MK schools for actual recruitment.

We
also work with Biola University, Seattle Pacific Univesity, The Master's
College, and are developing a relationship with Wheaton College.

(Future)
Mission trips for Prospective teachers of missionary children

Mission
trips specifically designed to visit MK teachers, schools, and parents does not
exist as far as we know. We
believe there is a need for such a trip since there are so many teacher
vacancies.

Program 2

Professional development with teachers and schools of children of missionaries

Professional
development with MK teachers and schools has been going on since 1997 in Kenya,
the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, and Papua New Guinea. We have worked in areas of elementary
science, reading and writing, AP English and math, and basic pedagogy. Other areas will be added as we attract
more volunteers. Some schools
request specific items and some simply say come and do anything. If requested, we can provide college
graduate credit through Seattle Pacific University. http://www.teachers-in-service.org/professional_development.php

BIO

Retired professor of teacher education.  International work with secular schools in Caribbean and New Zealand.  Began a museum of natural history and an after school science program for children.  National Park Service.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"I am a retired professor of teacher education.  Teachers In Service is a continuation of my career and definitely fills a need since none existed before.  I have traveled thousands of miles to work with these schools and to conduct interviews which now exist on YouTube.  For nearly 14 years I have met and worked with the most incredible people I can imagine.  Their hearts and faith are in the right place and it is a real privilege to be part of their family.  Still, we need more teachers to eliminate missionaries from leaving the field because "There is no one to teach my child!""
