Mission Statement

CIBBOWS aims to make Coney Island / Brighton Beach
a safe, clean training environment for open water
swimmers of all abilities
CIBBOWS is a 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to being the very best New York City
resource for open-water swimmers. Our strong, ever-growing community hosts weekly,
year-round training swims at Coney Island and Brighton Beach. attracting elite athletes
from around the world.
Our experienced members – English Channel, Strait of Gibraltar, Catalina, Manhattan
Island Marathon, Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel swimmers, and Olympians –
provide resources for those who want to learn how to swim comfortably and safely in
the ocean.
Our events are expertly run, fun swims that accommodate swimmers of all levels and
abilities.
Many members are accomplished, internationally recognized swimmers. Some of these
athletes have become influential worldwide in the international open-water swimming
community, particularly as the sport continues to grow.
Since 2005, CIBBOWS, the only not-for-profit organizer of swim races in New York
City, has presented a yearly series of fun and challenging ocean races including
one-mile, long-distance and cold-water events. We’ve hosted regional and national
championships for US Masters Swimming that attract swimmers from around the nation.
Our fundraising helps keep race costs to a minimum, and contributes to our dream of a
beachfront facility to serve as a home for open-water swimming on the East Coast.
CIBBOWS is working with several waterfront organizations to improve the relationship
between our City and the New York Harbor. We advocate improving the environment
of New York Harbor, and promoting public access to its waters; mutually-strengthening
partnerships with like-minded organizations; and affordable races, so that more people
can enjoy swimming events at our beaches.
