How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

To date we have buried over 146 abandoned children in San Diego which lead to the development of Garden of Innocence National which now has five more gardens in California and five more to be completed by end of the year. No child should leave this earth without someone who cared. We are teaching communities to come together to care for one of their own so no child will ever go in a "potters field" again.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Caskets & Urns for Kids

Boy Scouts from across the country are using our 'children making caskets for children' program as their Eagle Scout project to build the babies caskets or urns. It is an honor to attend their Eagle Scout Ceremony and accept this amazing gift. We also use local high school woodshops to build the urns or caskets and make the teachers aware of who they are for so they can discuss this with the students. We also involve local retired seniors to build the urns or finish them off.

Program 2

Beanie Babies for Garden of Innocence

Many people collected beanie babies over the years and now have no use or desire for them. We collect these toys to place in each casket or urn so every child receives a toy of their own. If we get toys that are not right to be buried with a child then we pass them on to Fire Departments or Police Departments to give to children that are scared in the emergency that they are in at that moment to help give them a little peace

Blankets for Garden of Innocence

We find seniors, students, parents, families etc, to make blankets for the babies. We need 30" X 30" for babies in caskets and 12" X 12" for babies in urns. Each baby that comes to Garden of Innocence receives a receiving blanket and a hand made blanket made by someone who cared.

Funding Needs

Our most pressing need is monetary donations so we can continue to bury the children of San Diego and help GOI National grow more gardens in California. Their goal is to complete 18 gardens in California and then a garden in every state. Our chapter here in San Diego is looking for $150,000 to build a niche wall as our fund raiser to raise additional funds to help our garden grow as well as our National endeavor.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

" The most important thing that Garden of Innocence does is to give a child the dignity of a name instead of a morgue number or the name Doe. This is a dignity every human being deserves. Secondly they deserve a dignified burial, instead of the trash or county morgue they were left in. We, as a community become their family and care for them until the ground is put back where it belongs over their resting placeA service attended by strangers that never knew them but cared enough to show up and be there to help send them home with the love and dignity of family. Each person is touched by their experience in the garden and a child is cared for that was not cared for before. "
