Principal Officer

Mr. Robert Okun

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"The problem that energized ThanksUSA's founders was that military spouses had no comprehensive nationwide scholarship program available to them. Our 2005 research indicated that, although military personnel have GI Bill educational benefits, the only program for them consisted of a $30,000 pool of money for merit-based scholarships offered by one organization whose specialty is policy research and family benefit lobbying. A similar lack of college and technical-school access hindered the teenage children of military parents, though the situation there was not quite as dire. By filling either of these gaps with scholarships, ThanksUSA aimed to help the armed services do better with reenlistments and enhance the “retention rate." Many guard and reserve households had college plans; but, when they were called to active-duty, their normal salary is interrupted, which hampers saving. Another situation is not uncommon: The spouse of a wounded soldier might suddenly become the sole breadwinner. By helping him or her finance higher education, we help the family increase its long-term earning power while reducing the near-term economic strain."
