Clean Energy Commercialization Center
In 2016, AHEAD obtained a commercial building in Brighton, NY, previously leased and used by GM and Delphi for fuel cell development, prototyping, and testing for more than 20 years. AHEAD has re-purposed the test lab infrastructure to develop a cost-effective, open-source lab space for:
-Cleantech Product Development
-24/7 Durability Testing
-System Integration & Development

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The ultimate goal for AHEAD Energy is a world in which there is universal access to life-enhancing energy.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy for achieving our long-term goal is to work with schools and medical facilities in Africa to help them gain access to the energy they need. We believe this is a practical strategy because 1) Africa is the region of greatest need in terms of energy, 2) By helping schools and medical facilities obtain the energy they need to carry out their vital services, whole communities begin to adopt energy systems that facilitate the ascent out of poverty, 3) working with schools and medical facilities allows us to work at a scale we can manage, and 4) building partnerships allows assistance to be given in a way the does not create dependency or feelings of entitlement.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our efforts are enhanced by being located on a college campus and drawing on the resources of academia to carry out our work. Over the past 23 years we have developed an extensive Tool Chest of energy technologies, an understanding of African contexts, extensive partnerships, and an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing energy development in Africa. Indeed, AHEAD Energy has been a pioneer in bringing the development community to the point where it is now about to focus on the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
When AHEAD Energy began, very few in the international development community considered energy to be important. Today, energy is recognized as a key to economic and social development. The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves has just been launched this year. The UN has declared 2012 the Year of Sustainable Energy for All. The International Energy Agency has even put a price tag on what it will take to achieve universal access to energy by 2030. The energy challenge has been taken up by most developing countries, spurred on by the UNFCCC's urgent call to control greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last 20 years AHEAD has learned that partnerships work better than unilateral aid, that grassroots efforts are less likely to be corrupted, that establishing respectful relationships is key to implementing successful projects, and that there is a role for philanthropy despite the international community's focus on an entreprenurial approach to the problem.
