Overview

Self-reported by organization

The 2013-2014 cycle was characterized by great loss and great overcoming for Projects2k. Our founder, our heart, our fearless leader--Joy Wulke--succumbed to a nine-month battle with cancer in February 2014. Her passing was a shock to all of her collaborators at Projects2k, and friends and family beyond. In her memory, and in honor of her grand vision of awe-inspiring events for community-building and environmental awareness, Projects2k carried out her final work, Terra Tractus, in the Stony Creek Quarry in Branford, Connecticut. The critically acclaimed show was vital meditation on the human and geological history of Connecticut, featuring the collaboration of over 25 artists utilizing lasers, dance, drums, music, lighting, sculpture, climbers, shadows and projections. Projects2k once again took to art to the streets for New Haven L.A.M.P., Light Artists Making Places in both 2013 and 2014. Projects2k was the featured organization for the 2013 event, lighting up the historic Bank Building in New Haven and filling its marbled walls with music and dance. Technical Direction for all performances were once again provided by Jamie Burnett and featured original music by composer Istvan B'Racz. We hope to keep the spirit of collaboration alive for the 2015-2016 cycle. Building new relationships, new performance events with local arts organizations, and continued support of local artists and community leaders will guide our projects for the next fiscal year.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"From the late Joy Wulke--"I was encouraged to create a non-profit organization in 1993 because of my passion for cross disciplinary collaborations. My inspiration has always been the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Our first collaboration was a sundial and laser chronometer in the Stony Creek Quarry in 1995. Twelve artists were invited to create hour markers and many members of the Branford community helped to created and install the environment. It was a magical experience that transformed how we look at the world around us and the passing of time. I continue to create unique programming in a variety of venues for collaborative events, performances, exhibitions and educational programs related to the integration of art, science, and the natural environment. Each project has a public presentation and/or performance by individual artists and scientists designed for schools and the public at large, each project is accompanied by a publication that may be used as source material for related projects and educational curriculum. I believe in the power of collaboration to foster the fusing of art, science, and the environment. Connecticut-based but with a broad potential, we intend to implement projects that have long lasting effects on how we see our state and its place in the larger world. We continue to create unique programming in a variety of venues for collaborative events, performances, exhibitions and educational programs related to the integration of art, science, and the natural environment. Our work is based in Connecticut with presentations across the country. Through our broad base we intend to bring the world to Connecticut in projects that will have long lasting effects on how we see our state and its place in the larger world. The major significance of our work is creating programming that focuses on individual responsibilities for the health and welfare of the built and natural environments in which we live and how that local effect extends to the world and to all peoples across the globe. We have been told by many that P2K and its projects are unique, not only within the state but in the region and beyond.""
