Overview

Self-reported by organization

Our outcome study shows only 27% of children from economically disadvantaged families are on or above grade level in language arts at the beginning of the preschool year; this percentage is 39% in math and 20% in social and emotional skills. At the end of the preschool year, an astounding improvement of 69% of these children are on or above grade level in language arts; this percentage is 77% in math and 64% in social and emotional skills. So, while children from economically disadvantaged families start out less skilled than their peers, after a year of quality preschool education, they show great success in closing this achievement gap. In a recent tracking study of our oldest alumni and their families, results gathered indicated that these children have graduated high school and enrolled in college or are on track to do so. In addition, we find these young people are involved in sports and/or in the arts and many are involved in service to their communities. We are tremendously gratified by these results. These findings affirm Preschool Advantage plays an essential role in the community by providing a solid educational foundation for local children to have a successful future.

Funding of Preschool

Preschool Advantage is an innovator in providing access to quality early childhood education programs. The lack of sources of assistance for working families unable to support the cost of preschool led to the founding of Preschool Advantage in Morristown in 1995. To date, we have funded over 1,000 half-day preschool tuitions since our inception.

The first years of a child’s life are critical to laying the foundation for a lifetime love of learning. Early childhood education sets the stage for future growth and propels children onto their educational paths. Despite the undeniable importance of a solid educational start, many local children have no means to attend preschool. Preschool Advantage serves the population of struggling families who do not qualify for government funded programs like Head Start because they earn above the poverty level, but are still earning below the level of sustainability for our region. These families simply cannot afford the cost of a preschool for their child, thus hindering the child’s success and opportunities later in life. Preschool Advantage funds children with special needs and families living in shelters, with an illness or disability, job loss, and low income. Approximately 76% of Preschool Advantage’s constituency consists of minority children and approximately 43% live in single parent homes.
