What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Career Exploration Program
Career Exploration programs are after school and day programs that are available to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, and focus on the following career pathways: accounting; actuarial; agriculture; architecture, construction, and engineering (ACE) – design; ACE – skilled trades; arts; creative careers; culinary; entrepreneurship; financial services; healthcare management; hospitality and business; human services; information technology; insurance; law; manufacturing and medical assistant.
Pre-Apprenticeship
YCAL Pre-Apprenticeship is a blended learning model intended to prepare students with the understanding of skills and job expectations of an Apprenticeship program. Students complete a theory-based online learning curriculum at their home high schools, followed by a hands-on learning portion that occurs at a workplace sponsoring their chosen field.
Educator in the Workplace
The Educator in the Workplace program connects teachers with the business community. The course provides educators the opportunity to develop an awareness and understanding of integrating the business and education communities, explore and develop innovative instruction practices, and provide relevance while building a capacity to enhance student achievement.
Through a mix of classroom learning activities and on-site learning in a workplace environment, educators enrolled in this course can expect to bring relevant work standards and experiences back to their classrooms. To read some testimonials from the course's graduates, scroll down.
This program is offered both as a non-credit (Act 48)** and for-credit course through our post-secondary partner, Shippensburg University. Educators spend three days in the classroom and three days working at a preselected business.
Career Education and Work Standards Symposium
The Career Education and Work Standards Symposium is an event held for York County educators which focuses on the inclusion of Career Education and Work Standards into all levels of K-12 curriculum. This event encourages empowerment by providing each educator in attendance with four impactful, relevant lesson plans to adapt to the grade level in which they specialize, as well as valuable resources to utilize in their classrooms.
Innovation Grants
Innovation Grants are mini grants of up to $1,000 each, and allow YCAL the opportunity to fund innovative projects that support its mission to “engage students in career exploration and development.” At the core of the grant guidelines is the partnership of a business or community organization. Please note that the grant is for the initial/pilot project, with a continuation plan required for maximum impact. York County educators can apply for the grants through an application process.
