Program 1

After-The-Bell

After-The-Bell is a unique after-school program designed to keep middle school students safe end engaged in meaningful activities after school. Founded in 1998 with the strong support of the local community, it is offered at no cost to students and families and at no direct cost to taxpayers. The program runs in three six-week cycles in the Fall, Winter, and Spring, aligned with the Kennett Consolidated School District calendar.
ATB offers a wide array of highly-structured and meaningful activities across multiple genres that are designed to keep adolescents both safe and engaged after school.
The program is lead by a full-time Executive Director and Program Director. While ATB is in session, we employ 3-4 part-time staff members who assist in supervision and support of program activities. All activities are facilitated by community volunteers, many of whom have significant experience in the activity they are leading. Activities are offered both onsite at Kennett Middle School and offsite at the location of some of the organization's community partners, including the Kennett YMCA, the Land Conservancy, Coverdale Farms, Longwood Gardens, and the Stroud Water Research Center. Activities include a wide array of choices in such areas as science, the arts, animal care, sports, cooking, engineering, and homework help.

BIO

Kathy earned her B.A. in Political Science from the State University of New York at Binghamton. She has worked as a community liaison and a communications and policy writer in both government and higher education. She has served in the administrations of former NY Governor Mario Cuomo and former U.S. Congressman Joseph Sestak, as well as in the administrations of a number of colleges in the northeast. She has a special interest in public education and is the author of the Congressional Report “Rockland's Voices: Making the Case for Amending the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002," which was cited as the nation's first broad-based review of the impact of the controversial law on local communities, and was highlighted during debates regarding the law's reauthorization.

Appointed Executive Director in the summer of 2014, Kathy is very committed to education and our local community. She has lived in Kennett Square for more than nine years and has been very active in public schools. She served as a member of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board of Directors and Chaired the districr's Curriculum & Education Technology Committee. She has also served in leadership positions for the UCF District's Education Foundation, PTOs, and After Prom Committee. With strong ties to both Unionville and Kennett Square, Kathy is looking forward to extending support for After The Bell to the larger area community.
