Mission Statement

The primary mission of ICS is to provide an intellectually stimulating curriculum with an international focus, emphasizing the arts, languages, ideas, and histories, from an array of cultures from around the world. To meet its goals, the school draws heavily on the resources available in Philadelphia- the museums, historic landmarks, businesses, schools, parks, communities, and families.

Program 1

The curriculum and curricular approaches adopted by ICS address diverse learnerrs while promoting a high level of excellence. The two main programs at ICS are FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) and Spanish Immersion. The FLES program includes all classes where English is the primary language of instruction. The students also receive an intense daily infusion of Spanish instruction from teachers who have a native or near native fluency. ICS offers its general program curriculum in Spanish, beginning in Kindergarten. Most students to not speak any Spanish upon entry. The goal is to facilitate successful learning using Spanish as the medium of instruction. This immediate and intense immersion produces students who are fully bilingual and biliterate. All ICS students in grades K-6 attend weekly music classes and weekly art classes. Additionally all students in grades K-6 attend Dance/Movement classes which build aerobic stregth as well as integrate the physical into the learning process. At each grade level from K-5, students study one unit of Amerrican History and tow in-depth country studies. In grades 6-8, the focus shifts entirely to American and World History. ICS provides programs for Special Education as well as Gifted Education.
