Mission Statement

The NLTHS preserves, presents and interprets the history of North Lake Tahoe both in a regional context and in the larger context of the American West. We do this in a manner that is engaging, educational and culturally sensitive through innovative programming and exhibits at the Gatekeeper's and Watson Cabin Museums of the NLTHS.

The Gatekeeper's Museum and Watson Cabin place emphasis on the cultural and geographical histories that influenced the development of North Lake Tahoe.

The Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum places emphasis on the historical and contemporary basketry traditions of western North America, and seeks to promote cultural awareness through programming in collaboration and consultation with native American weavers and scholars.

How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

The vision of the NLTHS is to operate a welcoming and inclusive location where engaging exhibits and interactive educational programming encourage interest in the stories of North Lake Tahoe history, for now and for future generations.

We believe the NLTHS is on the brink of change, joining historical societies and museums nationwide as we all evolve to meet the needs of a new generation of museum visitors. In addition to revising our mission and vision statements, we have recently begun reaching out to much wider audiences, incorporating educational programs for visitors of all ages.  In an effort to generate excitement about our Museums and programs, we have retired our former newsletter the Tahoe Tattler, in favor of the full-color information-rich Gatekeeper's Gazette, our new quarterly member and community magazine.

We have just completed a financial audit, and will post our financial statements, 990 and IRS determination letter on our website.

Moving forward, we have identified the following priorities for the NLTHS:

1.  Diversify and grow our income stream.

2.  Expand our membership base.

3.  Establish ourselves within the community as a cultural center.

4.  Establish ourselves as a "must-see" tourist destination.

5.  Continue to grow the talent on our Board of Directors through ongoing education, improved recruitment and openness and honesty in Board Meetings.

6.  Implement transparency in all operations.

In 2011, we will be opening a brand new exhibition on 20th century life and tourism on Lake Tahoe.

BIO

Prior to coming to NLTHS, Ms. Sprague served as the Executive Director of the Sierra State Parks Foundation; prior to that she was the Associate Director of Development for Save San Francisco Bay Association ("Save the Bay").

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"The North Lake Tahoe Historical Society holds the stories of the North Lake Tahoe region in trust for present and future generations. Our responsibility is to preserve this history, which provides us with testimony about who we are and our sense of place. Additionally, we preserve the record of our local environment, which is inextricably bound to the cultural history, from the early Washoe people to the present day visitors and residents. We are honored to be entrusted with this caretaking of identity and meaning. We invite you to visit our museums to immerse yourself in the exciting history of Lake Tahoe, from the water babies of the Washoe, to the water management of California's "Big Four" (Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark
Hopkins), to today's water issues (TRPA). The story of Tahoe reverberates throughout California, on throughout the United States and the world at large."
