Mission Statement

Built in 1832 and occupied by a merchant family for nearly 100 years, the Merchant's House is New York City?s only family home to have survived intact inside and out from the 19th century. It is one of only 2,000 sites designated National Historic Landmarks and has NYC landmark status for its late-Federal exterior and Greek Revival interior. It was among the first 20 buildings designated under the City?s new landmarks law in 1965 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum?s mission is to educate the public about domestic life in 19th-century during the significant period when New York established itself as the center of U.S. commerce and became a "world city" on par with London and Paris. It fulfills its mission through the restoration, conservation, preservation and interpretation of its building; its original collections of furniture, decorative arts, costumes, textiles, and archives; and its historic Garden.

Program 1

To fulfill our mission of educating the public about domestic life in 19th-century New York City, we operate three main programs: RESTORATION, COLLECTIONS CONSERVATION and PUBLIC EDUCATION. Our Restoration and Conservation Program projects are ongoing, and are grounded in recommendations made in the Museum's Historic Structures Report; a Museum Assessment Program survey conducted by the American Association of Museums; and a Conservation Assessment Program Evaluation prepared by the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property. Oversight/evaluation of restoration work is provided by the Museum?s Restoration Committee. Our Conservation Program works to preserve our original collections of furniture, decorative objects, textiles, costumes, and ephemera collected and used by the Tredwell family that occupied the House for 100 years. Projects in both areas are made possible primarily with contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. The Museum's Public Education Program serves adults of all ages, scholars, high school/college students, and children's school groups. Each year, we present dozens of programs -- exhibitions interpreting our collections, lectures, readings, tours, talks, and performances.
