What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Cultural Kitchen in the Schools and Youth Groups
Cultural Kitchens in the Schools is an evocative, content standards
based
curriculum spanning over the course of 5 sessions, with an optional
culminating overnight field trip to the Seattle hostel. Students learn
the power of cultural awareness, research skills, and community as they
work together to create a group presentation on a country of their
choice, exploring both their own cultural and an entirely new culture
along the way. The program culminates in an opportunity for the students
to cook a traditional meal from their research country, which they
share with their peers and international travel volunteers. After the
meal, the students are able to present their research in a creative
manner of their choice to an avid audience of international volunteers
and travelers at the Seattle hostel.
Cultural Kitchens in the Schools was first developed by Hostelling International
Chicago(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFQENtZCpVg&feature=related) and has been running in the Chicago Public School District since
2000. Since its inception the program has spread across the country,
and now reaches thousands of students each year. In Washington State we run the program in Seattle's Public School District as well as youth groups such as local Girl Scout troops.
Monthly Travel Circles
Once a month HIWSC hosts free speakers and informational sessions on a variety of subjects related to travel, exploring different regions of the world and modes of travel. Travel Circle speakers our volunteers from our community with significant experience in the subject field. All events are free and open to the public.
In February we expand our monthly Travel Circles to a weekly event called the Winter Wanderlust series. HI - Seattle and HI - Port Townsend host speakers once a week throughout the month to inspire and engage our community through the winter season.
World Travel 101
Teaches youths and adults the how-tos of travel: how to budget, pack, get around, and stay safe. Particular focus on the credo of the peaceful traveler: traveling with an open heart and an open mind.
Language for Travelers Course
HIWSC's newly developed Language for Travelers series gives future travelers a brief overview of a language, with focus on such travel-centric subject matter as ordering food, bargaining, getting a hostel room, and asking for directions. Our pilot course in Spanish ran this November. An additional Spanish for Travelers course will run this Spring, and potentially a French for Travelers course as well.
