Overview

Self-reported by organization

Since its inception, the BHA has been a valuable asset to the arts community. It is one of only a few organizations dedicated towards empowering working artists to professionally hone and develop their crafts, as well as realize their artistic goals. Accomplishments: Programming: Featured Artist Exhibition Series: Day of Giving funds were used to host solo artists exhibitions in 2013-2014; they helped to defray the costs associated with individual exhibitions. The Distillery Program: This year's Distillery Program was successful in its mission of continuing to expand and support the development of Pittsburgh's emerging artists. The program included: artist partnerships and mentorships, lecture series and studio visits with local artists, curators, and administrators, an arts exchange with the Buffalo Arts Studio, a mid-program show, and a final exhibition at the BHA. BHA Building: Recently it was announced that the Brew House, in partnership with TREK Development Group, was awarded a tax credit allocation from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency. The tax credits of approximately $1.2 million will yield between $10 and $13 million, providing the funds necessary to start the development project of the gargantuan building of 103,000 square feet into approximately 75 residential apartments—of which a significant percentage will be established for artist-preference—as well as gallery space, artist studios, community workspace, and demonstration areas for the public to learn and engage the arts. Goals: The BHA goals for 2014-2015 will focus on pursuing funding support for subsidizing the redevelopment of the BHA building, supporting the creation of a director staff position, and identifying community partnerships.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Current Programming

Currently, the Brew House has three core programs: R.A.W Artists-in-Residence, Featured Artist Exhibition Series, and Distillery. Though each program is distinct, all are possible because of BHA's ability to provide the integration of physical space, a community of artists, and opportunities to exhibit and share art. The current programs truly highlight the Brew House Association's strength: as an incubator for artist growth at every stage of an artists career.

Future Programming in 3 Tiers

The Brew House's new programming model charts the path forward for the organization following redevelopment: draws from experience obtained from the Brew House's long tenure in the South Side; is deeply rooted in the organization's mission and values: and, considers best practices from similar arts organizations across the country.Tier I: Germination Stage This stage includes shared workspace, gallery, and classrooms: a place where artists and community members can access the tools they need, create with guidance and exhibit their results. Tier II: Fermentation Stage:Housing the current, highly successful Distillery and R.A.W. programs, Tier II will provide local emerging artists with a residency program and support system, as well as allow them to work and grow in a communal environment. Tier III: Brew Masters:The Brew House's most distinguished programmatic offering, Tier III is a national residency program that will invite two or more established artists per year to live and work in BHA space.

Funding Needs

The Brew House has several pressing needs to address in order to meet our 2014 strategic planning objectives. Organizational Structure:The Brew House needs to identify funding opportunities for hiring a permanent staff person. Approximate cost per year: $30,000. Programming: Featured Artists Exhibition Series: Day of Giving funds will be used to defray the costs associated with an individual exhibition. Distillery Program: Funds will go to support guest lectures, artist exhibitions, as well as studio visits and administrative costs. Guest Artist Residency Program: Two or more established artists will be invited to live and work inthe Brew House for a short period of time (3-6 months). These artists would help mentor young artist members, would teach classes and/or provide community access, and would raise awareness of the Brew House. Estimated cost for implementing this program twice a year would be $76,000. BHA Building:The BHA needs to identify funding opportunities to hire a program manager to oversee the re-development process. The cost estimate for this will be $30,000.
