Mission Statement

Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance (LATCRA) proposes to erect a monument commemorating President Lincoln's Grand Review of the Army of the Potomac at Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia. The statue of President Lincoln and the bas relief showing the Grand Review was designed by the late Ron Tunison and will be completed by his son Trevor. At this historic event on November 20, 1861, 70,000 soldiers marched in a 10-hour parade witnessed by 30,000 spectators. This imposing show of force unequivocally announced to all that the Union was prepared to win the Civil War.
While 100,000 people participated in this important event, only a small, barely visible highway marker is there to preserve its memory. But its significance in 1861 did not escape Julia Ward Howe. Having witnessed the parade, she returned to her hotel in Washington, DC, where she penned the lyrics to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic." This powerful show of force made it clear to the world that the Union Army was fully equipped and prepared to fight, notwithstanding its crushing defeat at Bull Run in July of that year.

Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance (LATCRA) must raise 1.3 million dollars to have the bronze monument cast, delivered, installed, and landscaped at a site in Baileys Crossroads, Va. This site will offer visibility, accessibility, and security. The monument will provide an appropriate setting for recollection and remembrance. The monument we seek to erect would remind current and future generations of Americans that our Northern Virginia community has an important, enduring place in history.
