How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

As of 2009, 60% of the African American population was
reported as having access to the internet at home.  However, only 30.9% were noted as having
access to the internet at work.  These
statistics suggest African Americans may be underrepresented in fields
utilizing Information Technology (I.T.), which is a global growth industry of
greater than $3 trillion dollars in economic opportunities.  Since the year 2000, The Enitiative Group has
helped more than 800 families through its IT-based programs including computer
donations and support, web design assistance, job training, and its latest
genealogy efforts.  While the Bureau of
Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that household internet access has tripled since
1997, African American employment in IT-related careers has not followed
suit.  Upon completion of programming, 537
(67%) said they would consider pursuing an IT-related major or career.  When asked why they hadn’t considered an IT
career before the program, the majority of respondents had perceived IT as
being “boring.”

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"Our organization is unique in its understanding of how underprivileged youth and minorities perceive educational opportunities.  In my elementary years, I recall pretending to not know the answers to questions just to "fit" in.  Fortunately, my mother had a different plan for me and didn't allow me to succumb to the status quo of mediocrity.  Because of that hard fought education, we have learned how to define the excitement of the programs and careers we introduce to our participants."
